SIE Japan Studio
~ the eulogy ~
Sony Computer Entertainment set up in Tokyo in November 1993 and its internal development ran like a record label for the first decade, with producers finding people rather than a studio building a pipeline. That is where PaRappa the Rapper and Everybody's Golf come from. The scattered teams were consolidated around 2000 and the whole thing was formally named Japan Studio on 1 July 2005.
What sat inside it was never one studio. Fumito Ueda's group made Ico in 2001 and Shadow of the Colossus in 2005, still the two games people reach for to argue that this medium can do restraint. Keiichiro Toyama's team, built out of the people who had made Silent Hill, did Siren and later Gravity Rush. A separate unit handled Ape Escape and LocoRoco. Team Asobi was formed in 2012 and spent years on work attached to hardware demonstrations.
The other half of the job never had the studio's name anywhere near it. Japan Studio co-developed Bloodborne with FromSoftware and worked on the Demon's Souls remake with Bluepoint, and it handled external production and localization for a large share of what Sony shipped out of Japan. Anyone who played PlayStation games through the 2000s played this studio's work constantly without being told once.
This is the only grave in this run i watched happen. February 2021, i was in my late thirties and working, and it came through as a news story rather than as something to reconstruct twenty years late. Being present did not help. VGC reported on 25 February that the contracts were not being renewed, and Sony confirmed the studio would be re-organized into a new organization on 1 April, a sentence carefully built to contain nothing. There was no closure announcement because on paper nothing closed. Watching something die in real time turns out to be no clearer than reading about it afterward, if the people doing it have decided not to say so.

~ the actual end ~
The mechanism is worth being exact about, because it is not the one people assume. Most of the development staff were on annual contracts running to the end of the Japanese business year on 31 March. Sony did not renew them. The localization and business people stayed. There was no administration and no buyer, just a date on which most of a studio was no longer employed.
The reasoning reported at the time was that original output was not profitable enough to keep funding. The output in question includes Gravity Rush, which sold modestly, and Knack, which is mostly remembered as a joke. Both of those readings are true at the same time. The people had started leaving before the date anyway. Toyama had already gone to found Bokeh Game Studio, and the Bloodborne producer Masaaki Yamagiwa left at the end of February 2021.
~ the one team that lived ~
Team Asobi survived because Astro's Playroom had come preinstalled on every PlayStation 5 in November 2020 and was the best reviewed thing the studio had produced in years. It was spun out as its own PlayStation studio in June 2021 under Nicolas Doucet.
Then in September 2024 it shipped Astro Bot, and that December the game won game of the year at The Game Awards along with best game direction. Three and a half years after Sony decided its Japanese studio could not justify original development, the surviving fragment of that studio won the industry's main award for an original game. Nobody at Sony has ever had to account for that, because the organization that was wound down and the organization that won are technically not the same one.
