Nier Re[in]carnation

2021 - 2024

square enix and applibot's mobile gacha set in the world of nier and nier: automata. the japanese version launched on 18 february 2021 and the western english/localized version on 28 july 2021. two and a half years later square enix announced the shutdown, ran a farewell content push with free daily summons and the final story chapter, and closed worldwide service on 29 april 2024.

i missed nier re[in]carnation. mobile gacha in a japanese-ip universe was not a category i touched, and i was not on the square enix mobile pipeline anyway. i am a computer engineer in ankara who watched the console nier releases from a distance and never played automata past the demo. mobile spinoffs of that ip landed even further out of my orbit.

the game launched in japan on 18 february 2021 and globally in english on 28 july 2021. developer was applibot, a japanese mobile studio square enix uses for its mobile-first live-service titles. the setting was called the cage, a mostly monochrome vertical dungeon that acted as a mobile-original branch of the nier universe rather than a retelling of any of the console games. yoko taro was involved in the storytelling. the visuals leaned into the same austere black-and-white aesthetic that made the nier console games recognizable, and the combat was standard mobile turn-based-with-active-timing.

by 2023 the revenue was not clearing the bar for a square enix mobile title, and the whole company was in the middle of writing off several billion yen in content losses from underperforming games. square enix announced the shutdown on 24 january 2024 with an end-of-service date of 29 april. the japanese and global versions closed on the same day.

~ what it was ~

re[in]carnation was structured around chapters. you climbed the cage, the story unfolded in short cinematic beats, and combat happened in party-based turn-based encounters. character summons were the monetization spine. gacha pulls for weapon spirits and character alt-costumes drove the revenue, standard for the segment. the ip did the work of making the setting feel worth the pulls. yoko taro's writing gave it a mood that most gacha titles never approach, which is why the small audience that stayed with it stayed for the full two and a half years.

what it did not have was a hook that pulled in players from outside the nier fandom. it looked strange and slow to anyone who was not already invested. it was not automata on the phone, and the western launch was quiet enough that a lot of people who would have liked it never heard of it in 2021. really.

~ what really happened ~

square enix ran the last three months as a farewell push, unusually generous for a mobile shutdown. free ten-pulls every day. free gems in the mail every week. all limited-time content unlocked for the archive. the final story chapter dropped on 28 march 2024, giving the game a real ending on the story side rather than just letting the servers die mid-arc. that is not how most gacha shutdowns are handled.

the shutdown was part of a broader square enix mobile cleanup. the company had already killed several other mobile titles across 2023 and 2024, and the strategic message from tokyo was that mobile live service was going to be smaller in the portfolio going forward. re[in]carnation was the highest-profile of that cleanup because it carried the nier name.

~ what got buried with it ~

mobile-first stories with their own ending exist inside gacha games but they very rarely survive the shutdown of the game. re[in]carnation is now unplayable in any form. no offline mode. no archive client. the story exists in youtube playthroughs and fan wikis and nowhere else that has any claim to being canonical. [[marvel-avengers-alliance]] took the same route out and left the same shape of absence. [[elyon]] and [[wizardry-online]] belong to the adjacent grave of anime and mmo-ip mobile games killed in the 2020s post-zirp cleanup. re[in]carnation is smaller and stranger than any of them, which is why the fans who stayed for the finale still write about it.
