~ the goodbye ~
by 2012 i was a computer engineer in ankara playing counter-strike and steam-purchased games. facebook games were on the other side of a wall i did not want to climb over. marvel: avengers alliance came out on 1 march 2012 as a promotional companion to the avengers movie, and even though it sat exactly on my media diet's coordinates (movie i was going to see, marvel roster i grew up with), the wrapping around it (a facebook flash game where you spent silver to recruit heroes) kept me out.
the game itself was more serious than most facebook titles of its era. playdom, a disney subsidiary that had already burned through the earlier facebook casual-game gold rush, put a turn-based combat engine underneath the marvel license. you played a s.h.i.e.l.d. agent recruiting heroes, 166 by the end. combat used a rock-paper-scissors class system with six roles: blaster, bruiser, scrapper, infiltrator, tactician, generalist. pvp brackets ran on a tournament ladder. special ops added time-limited comic-event storylines with unique boss villains and unlockable characters.
by 2016 the whole facebook-flash-game category was collapsing. adobe had confirmed flash was on the way out and facebook was actively deprecating the platform side that gaming apps depended on. mobile-first gacha games had taken most of the licensed-hero mindshare. on 1 september 2016 disney interactive announced that the facebook original, the mobile sequel, and the smaller marvel: avengers alliance tactics would all go dark on 30 september. everything shut down together at 11:59 pm pacific.

~ how it played ~
you started as a level-1 agent. heroes unlocked with in-game currencies (silver for common, gold for premium) or through special ops event stories. each hero had a class, four attack skills, and passive stats that changed by uniform. uniforms were the microtransaction layer. spider-man had ten uniforms; iron man had more than fifteen. every uniform changed the character's animations and sometimes their moveset. that was where the money was.
the special operations events were the reason people kept logging in for four years. every couple of months a new event would drop, tied to a marvel comic arc like spider-verse or an ultimate marvel vs capcom crossover. completing tasks over a two-week window would unlock a new hero. miss the window and the hero became gold-only until the event returned, if it did. this created the exact fomo economy every live game since has copied.
~ how it ended ~
disney's official line on the shutdown was that the studio was reallocating resources into new games and digital experiences. the real reason was more mechanical. playdom had missed the mobile transition and its parent, disney interactive, had been posting losses for years. adobe was killing flash. facebook was pushing every app developer toward html5, which playdom's engine had no story for. running a live game with 166 characters and four years of balance patches on top of that stack stopped being worth it once the peak player numbers slipped past a threshold no one told the community.
the shutdown notice offered no refunds for spent currency and no data export of your roster. players had one month to say goodbye. change.org petitions collected six-figure signature counts. none of them worked. on 30 september 2016 the servers went off and every uniform anyone had ever purchased evaporated at the same second.
~ what remains ~
a fan revival called marvel: avengers alliance redux exists in 2026 as a private server that runs a reverse-engineered flash client through ruffle. the community treats it as a museum project rather than a game, which is honest. [[mafia-wars]] and [[cityville]] were social-graph games that assumed everyone would keep clicking. avengers alliance was closer to a proper single-player rpg with a wrapper you could recognize, which made it harder to replicate anywhere else after the servers went dark.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.
from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
