Synced

2023 - 2024
dead
synced was the free-to-play sci-fi co-op looter-shooter that next studios built and tencent's level infinite published in september 2023. it peaked at 10,272 concurrent players on steam right after launch, then lost ninety-nine percent of those players inside six months under a stack of server outages and unexplained wipes. tencent announced the closure in july 2024 and the servers went dark at 11:00 gmt+8 on 9 september 2024, a year and a day after launch.

~ the eulogy ~

by the time synced launched in september 2023 i was 39, working on edge ai for uavs in ankara, and the looter-shooter wave had already crested twice without me. destiny had been the first one i did not buy in 2014, division was the second one i did not buy in 2016. by 2023 i had a clear pattern of letting these games pass through. synced sat in that same lane.

the game was built by next studios, an in-house tencent game studio in shenzhen that had earlier shipped death stranding's pc port and the smaller indie projects under the tencent umbrella. the publishing label was level infinite, tencent's western-facing global brand. the free-to-play release landed on pc on 8 september 2023 after a delayed console launch promise. the pitch was a sci-fi co-op shooter where humans fought back against the nano, a hostile post-apocalyptic substance you also had to tame to use as your weapon-summoning prime helper.

the launch numbers looked fine for about three days. steamdb logged a peak of 10,272 concurrent players in the first week. that was the high-water mark, and the only one. within a month the player count was in the low thousands. within six months it was a few hundred. by mid-april 2024 the concurrent count had been in double digits for weeks at a stretch.

~ the origin ~

the launch window had real attention. pc gamer covered the open release and gamedeveloper covered the level infinite branding, while massively overpowered ran a piece about the planned console port. the game was visible inside the september 2023 free-to-play discourse, with the same kind of writeups that any tencent western-facing release attracts. the nano companion mechanic was the part that read well in trailers, a small symbiote-shaped helper that drew weapons out of the environment for you and could be tuned across runs.

the first impressions ran somewhere between cautious and positive. nobody called it an event. nobody called it dead on arrival either. the prevailing read was that this was a competent free-to-play co-op shooter that would either grow into a tencent service game or fade into the back catalog inside eighteen months. the second branch is the one it took.

~ the unraveling ~

the server stability story is the one that surfaced first. players reported repeated server outages through october and november 2023, with some matches lost mid-session. then the wipes started. unexplained character resets, lost progression, missing inventory after server downtime windows. the official forum threads stayed open for weeks without clean answers from the operations team. for a free-to-play co-op shooter where the only durable value is the character you are building, the wipes were the load-bearing problem.

the steam reviews collapsed across late 2023. the player count followed. by january 2024 the steamdb chart was a straight line down. by mid-april the concurrent count was below fifty for entire weekdays. that is the player base of a niche indie game, not of a launch-year tencent shooter. the path to recovery would have required a substantial relaunch, and tencent has a known pattern of pulling the plug on service games that miss the launch window rather than reworking them in public.

~ the day it died ~

on 9 july 2024 the official synced channels posted the shutdown notice. registration was disabled the same day, and in-app purchases stopped immediately. the cited reason was the standard rights-holder decision language with no operational detail. the final cutoff was set for 11:00 on 9 september 2024 in beijing time, exactly one year and one day after the free-to-play launch.

on the morning of 9 september 2024 the servers went down at the announced time, with matchmaking stopping inside the same hour. the steam page stayed up briefly with an unplayable status, then was delisted in the weeks that followed. tencent has not commented publicly on the synced post-mortem since. next studios moved on to other projects under the tencent umbrella, with the nano-mechanic ip sitting on a shelf.
