~ the last words ~
glow was a device for a demographic and a country i sat pretty far outside of. it was aimed at american kids five to nine years old and their american grandparents, priced at $300 in the united states, sold nowhere else. i was 37 in ankara when it launched, no small children in the house, and the shipping question was not something amazon.com.tr was set up to answer. it stayed a thing i read about in techcrunch summaries rather than a device that ever passed through my hands.
the announcement landed on 28 september 2021 at the amazon fall hardware event, in the same keynote that introduced the astro home robot and a couple of the ring drone concepts. glow was pitched at $249.99 as an invite-only preview for a small group of buyers, with wider retail planned for the following spring. general availability came on 29 march 2022 at $299.99. between announcement and retail it had been about half a year, and by the time the general shelves opened, the pandemic-era demand for video-calling-with-grandma was already fading.
the device itself was two things stacked into one plastic tower. an 8-inch tablet-style display on the front handled the video call and let the child see whoever they were talking to. below the display, a projector cast a 19-inch touch-sensitive canvas onto the tabletop in front of the device, where the child and the remote adult could interact with the same shared surface. amazon shipped a silicone mat that acted as the touch layer plus a starter tangram puzzle set. content deals with disney, mattel, nickelodeon, and sesame workshop populated the activity library. a one-year subscription to amazon kids+ came in the box.

~ the pitch ~
the tabletop-projection thing was the interesting engineering choice. video calls with children under about eight run into a problem where the kid loses interest in the passive rectangle of the caller's face after ninety seconds and wanders off. amazon's answer was to give both ends of the call a shared physical-and-digital play space so the video-call minute was a byproduct of a joint puzzle or a joint drawing rather than the whole event. the remote adult ran the same activities from a phone app while the kid worked on the projected canvas. that part worked, by most of the reviews.
what glow could not fix was the deployment math. the device needed a flat table with enough clearance overhead for the projector to cast, a wifi signal strong enough to run the video plus the shared activity state, plus an adult ready to run the corresponding app on the other end at the exact right moment. the family whose grandma was up for a scheduled evening puzzle session at 7pm eastern was a smaller family than the amazon devices spreadsheet had assumed.
~ how it ended ~
on 4 october 2022 amazon confirmed to cnbc that it was discontinuing glow. the company would honor warranties and refund every buyer in full, with a short wind-down window for the app-based services. no successor was announced. amazon devices had a lot of these years in a row. echo look was already dead by 2020 and the fire phone had been dead since 2015, with dash buttons ending in 2019 to round out the closet. the pandemic-hardware slate that glow sat inside was a specific one-year bet.
~ the legacy ~
glow is a small physical object that most people who bought one still have somewhere in a closet since the refund did not require returning the hardware. some got repurposed by hobbyists as a general-purpose projector-with-touch-mat setup, though the software layer was tied to amazon services that shut down over the following year. the projector-tabletop-video-call concept did not get picked up by any other consumer maker afterward. video calling with small children in 2026 is a phone in landscape mode, a bored parent holding it up, and the kid running around the room offscreen. the same problem glow tried to solve, still unsolved.
