Nokia X

2014 - 2014

the nokia x was nokia's brief detour into android. the x and the xl handsets (plus the slightly upgraded x+ on the same chassis) were unveiled at mwc on february 24 2014 with a forked aosp build that stripped out google services and put a tile-style nokia launcher on top. the line was aimed at emerging-market price points (89 to 109 euros) and was conceived as a feature-phone replacement for the asha series. microsoft closed the nokia acquisition two months later and on july 17 2014 announced a restructure that killed the program and pushed the same buyers toward lumia windows phone. the nokia x2 in june 2014 was the only second-generation device before the line was wound down.

~ the obituary ~

i remember the nokia x announcement from the mwc 2014 stream. by then, i was 30 in ankara on a galaxy s4 that i had bought outright and unlocked off the operator. honestly, the nokia x landing in turkey was a strange moment. nokia had been the default phone brand in turkey for the entire 2002 to 2008 window (every internet cafe owner i knew had a 1100 or a 3310 in their pocket) and the brand still had real weight in the consumer mind in 2014 even though the symbian line was already a museum piece. anyway, an android phone with the nokia badge on it was supposed to revive the brand at the lower price tier, with the x at 89 euros and the xl at 109 euros aimed at exactly the kind of buyer who had bought a 1100 ten years before.

nokia unveiled the x line at mobile world congress in barcelona on february 24 2014 with three handsets. the nokia x had a 4-inch display with 1 gb ram on dual-sim, the nokia x+ ran on the same chassis with more memory, and the nokia xl was the phablet of the lineup at 5 inches. stephen elop was on stage doing the unveil even though microsoft had already announced the acquisition of nokia's devices and services unit and the deal was just waiting on regulatory close. for some reason, the nokia x platform was not actually android. it was an aosp fork with google services stripped out. the replacement layer was nokia's own mix store plus microsoft's outlook and skype, with onedrive integration sitting under a tile-style launcher that visually echoed windows phone. apks would side-load and most of them would run, but the play store was not on the device.

microsoft closed the nokia acquisition on april 25 2014 for around 7.2 billion dollars (devices and services unit only, hmd-style brand-licensing came later). the new microsoft mobile org under stephen elop kept the x line running for about three months. on july 17 2014 satya nadella's first major restructure announcement put the nokia x program on the kill list, with the existing roadmap shifting "down" toward lumia 5xx windows phone hardware at the same price tier. anyway, the nokia x2 had just shipped in june and was the last new device the line produced. the chinese-market nokia xl 4g came in july and was effectively a posthumous release.

~ the strategy that built it ~

this happened more inside finland and india than where i was. the nokia x platform had been in development under the codename "normandy" through 2013 as a hedge against the microsoft acquisition. nokia engineers were aware that the asha series (the s40 feature phones with smartphone apps on top) was running out of road, and the symbian successors were not going to scale to the emerging-market price tier microsoft wanted lumia to occupy. honestly, the normandy team built an aosp fork because aosp was the only mobile platform with a real app ecosystem that did not require licensing fees per device.

the design work was good. the nokia x launcher had a clean tile-style grid with optional widget tiles and a left-edge fastlane that pulled in notifications plus recent apps in a single scrollable feed. the hardware was solid plastic in the bright nokia colors (green, cyan, yellow) that the lumia line had popularized. by then the early reviews in india and china (the two primary launch markets) were positive on the hardware and skeptical on the no-google-services pitch.

~ what really happened ~

the july 17 2014 satya nadella restructure was the kill. nadella announced 18,000 layoffs across microsoft, with around 12,500 of them from the nokia devices and services side. the same memo killed the nokia x roadmap and said the affected users would be migrated to lumia windows phone hardware. for some reason, that migration path made no sense to the actual nokia x buyer in india or in bangladesh, who had picked the x over a lumia 520 precisely because they wanted android apps and the price was the same.

the nokia x2 stayed in retail through 2014 and into early 2015 as inventory ran out. the china-market nokia xl 4g had a slightly longer tail under operator-bundled deals. anyway, by late 2015 the entire nokia-branded smartphone line (lumia, x, asha) was inside microsoft mobile and the brand had effectively been replaced by the microsoft lumia label on new hardware.

~ what it became ~

the normandy team broke up after the july 2014 announcement. some moved into the microsoft surface group. others left for samsung, oppo, or xiaomi during the 2014-2016 emerging-market android expansion. the nokia x launcher work fed into a small number of microsoft launcher experiments on android over the next few years (microsoft launcher for android shipped in 2017 and shared some lineage with the x platform's tile model).

the nokia brand itself came back to phones in late 2016 under hmd global, a finnish licensing operation that put nokia branding on stock-android devices. that is a totally separate commercial entity from the 2014 nokia x program and the hmd phones were never the same product. the original nokia x platform, the aosp fork with the tile launcher, did not survive the july 2014 cut. you can still find the firmware archives on xda-developers if you want to flash one onto a parked nokia x handset in a drawer somewhere.
