~ the last words ~
snap pixy was the kind of product a particular slice of gen z snapchat users were supposed to buy, the same slice that still treated snapchat as their primary social app in 2022. that was not my demographic. by then i was 38, had not opened snapchat in five years, and was not the buyer of any $230 toy that hovered over a person's head and recorded short videos. honestly, by the time the announcement landed in april '22 i had to read four tech-press summaries to confirm the device was real and not a parody of a snap product round.
snap had been trying to make hardware work since the spectacles 1st generation in 2016, which had shipped in yellow vending machines and ended with $40 million in unsold inventory. either way, the spectacles line continued through three more generations with smaller releases and tighter inventory, but the underlying problem of "snap is a software company shipping standalone hardware to existing snapchat users" never quite went away. pixy was the next attempt, internally codenamed in the spectacles & hardware team in santa monica, announced at the snap partner summit on april 28 2022.
the device itself was a small yellow quadcopter the size of a palm, with no controller, no gimbal, and four preset flight modes labeled float, follow, reveal, and orbit. you set the mode on the touchpad on the body, set pixy down on your open palm, and the device lifted off, executed the preset flight, and landed back on the same hand. the captured footage transferred over wifi to the snapchat app where you could edit and post. honestly, the technical execution was clean, the price point was high enough to cap the market, and the use case had no second viewer beyond "post a clip to your story." for some reason.
the funeral notice landed on august 18 2022, four months after launch. the wall street journal broke the story that snap had told staff future pixy development was halted as part of a broader company restructuring tied to the advertising slowdown q2 had revealed. snap kept selling the existing pixy units through its store until inventory cleared, but no successor was planned. anyway, the q2 2022 earnings report mentioned a $43 million impairment charge tied to hardware. evan spiegel told the staff in the memo that the company was pulling back from product bets that were not core to advertising revenue. that part is the actual ending.

~ what it was ~
the hardware spec was a small step beyond a hobbyist drone. either way, the body weighed 101 grams, the integrated camera shot 2.7k video at 30 frames per second, the battery lasted around five to eight flights per charge with each flight maxing out at around twenty seconds. the wifi-based airdrop into snapchat was the snap-coded part, with a corresponding cloud-storage offering bundled at a higher snap subscription tier.
back then. the marketing framed pixy as a "pocket sidekick" rather than a drone, which is what most consumer drones called themselves to dodge the faa registration thresholds. anyway, pixy was below 250 grams so it required no us drone registration. that legal positioning was the entire reason the spec was what it was, with the flight time and the flight radius capped to keep the weight low.
~ how it ended ~
the q2 2022 advertiser slowdown that hit snap was the actual cause. anyway, the company missed revenue estimates by a wide margin in late july, the stock dropped ~40% in a single day, evan spiegel told the staff the company would slow hiring and review projects. pixy was the first hardware program to get cut publicly. the spectacles 4th generation augmented-reality pair, which was developer-only and never went into mass retail, kept going at a smaller scale.
honestly, this was the second hardware project snap had killed in three years (after spectacles 2 and 3 quietly fading). the cost cuts in august 2022 turned into a 20% layoff round across the company a few weeks later. nothing replaced pixy in the lineup.
~ the long tail ~
the remaining pixy units cleared through the snap store by late 2023 and the product page came down quietly. the pixy support documentation stayed up at snap.com for owners who needed firmware updates, which had stopped shipping by 2024 anyway. evan spiegel returned to talking about ar glasses in 2024 as the snap hardware bet, with spectacles 5 in september '24 sold to developers at $99 a month rather than a one-time price. honestly, the company learned a slow lesson about hardware that started with the spectacles vending machines and was still ongoing.
pixy itself shows up in ebay listings in 2026 between $80 and $150 a unit, mostly bought by drone-hobby people for the small form factor rather than by snapchat users for the original purpose. anyway, the use case it was designed for had no second life. snap stayed an advertising company shipping software, with a small hardware sidebar that never quite became a real business.
