ZeroLend

2023 - 2026
dead
zerolend was a decentralized lending protocol launched in early 2023 as a friendly fork of aave, initially deployed on linea (the zk-rollup bootstrapped by consensys) and then extended across a dozen other chains including manta and zircuit. total value locked peaked near $359 million in november 2024 during the linea points farming rush, then fell hard through 2025 as points programs wound down and users chased incentives elsewhere. the lbtc exploit on base in february 2025 pulled liquidity from the deposit side and cost the protocol its security budget. the team announced cessation of operations on 17 february 2026, set most markets to 0% loan-to-value, and pushed users to withdraw before oracle providers pulled the last price feeds.

~ the obit ~

zerolend never surfaced in the piece of the internet i pay attention to. defi lending on linea and manta was three levels of stack below where any of my time went in 2023 and 2024. i knew aave as the canonical open-source lending contract in ethereum defi. zerolend was one of the friendly forks of aave running on newer zk-rollups, and the whole friendly-fork category was a set of names that appeared on defillama dashboards for a while then vanished.

zerolend launched in early 2023, a fork of aave v3 pointed at linea while linea was still in bootstrap. the protocol took the standard money-market design (deposit collateral, borrow against it, interest accrues to depositors) and rewrote nothing important. what it added was multi-chain reach. by 2024 the deployment list read like a screenshot of every rollup that wanted to be talked about.

the tvl peak was about $359 million in november 2024, right in the middle of the linea points farming season. points programs pay depositors in future-token allocations that may or may not materialize, and depositors in that period were chasing points across every eligible protocol. zerolend rode the linea wave up and had nothing else pulling users in when it wound down. the tvl chart on defillama through 2025 shows the usual shape after a points program ends. steep at first, then a slow bleed to nearly nothing.

~ the rap sheet ~

Bornearly 2023 as a friendly fork of aave deployed first on linea
Peakabout $359 million total value locked in november 2024 across a dozen chains
Killed17 February 2026 (markets set to 0% ltv, withdrawal-only mode)
Lifespanroughly three years
Made bythe zerolend team led by lead maintainer 'zeller' on the aave governance forum
Killed byoracle providers dropping support, thin lending margins, the lbtc exploit fallout

~ what went wrong ~

the february 2025 lbtc exploit on base was the first cut. lombard staked bitcoin, the wrapped-btc token zerolend accepted as collateral on base, was breached and attackers minted fraudulent lbtc that they posted as collateral to drain liquidity. the recovery process involved the zerolend team promising partial compensation to affected users out of the protocol's own linea token allocation, which pushed the security budget from thin to negative.

by late 2025 the oracle providers were pulling support from the low-liquidity chains. chainlink and redstone maintain price feeds only where the fees justify the infrastructure, and manta and zircuit had all dropped below the threshold where any oracle wanted to keep publishing. once the feeds stopped, the protocol could no longer safely accept borrow requests. the february 17 announcement was the formalization of a state that had already arrived.

~ how it actually ended ~

the shutdown notice was written in the standard cessation-of-operations register. thin margins, high risk profile, prolonged periods of operating at a loss. the team set most markets to 0% loan-to-value, which meant existing borrowers could keep positions but nobody could open new ones. deposits stayed withdrawable on any chain where the oracles still worked. the priority in the notice was for users on manta and zircuit to move first before the feeds went dark.

~ the long tail ~

the aave fork category as a whole took a hit. zerolend had been the most-forked name in the linea deployment set and its wind-down let aave itself deploy natively on linea in the same window. what looked like a competitive tier in 2023 turned out to be a temporary artifact of an incentive program. once the points stopped the fork model had nothing left. the aave contracts kept running. the zerolend contracts kept running too, just in withdrawal-only mode, until the oracles stopped answering.
