NFTfi

2020 - 2026

nftfi was the largest peer-to-peer nft-collateralized lending platform on ethereum, launched in may 2020 by stephen young out of cape town, south africa. lenders offered eth or wrapped eth loans against borrowers' nft collateral (mostly bored apes, cryptopunks, doodles and other blue-chip pfp collections), with terms typically 30-90 days at 20-60% apr. over six years of operation the protocol facilitated more than $737 million across roughly 82,000 peer-to-peer loans, with lenders earning nearly $17 million in interest. the shutdown announcement went up in mid-2026 citing revenue that no longer covered operating costs, new loans were stopped immediately, existing loans could be refinanced until 31 july 2026, and the frontend went offline on 31 august 2026 with the smart contracts left running for direct on-chain interaction.

~ the eulogy ~

i did not use nftfi. by 2020 i was 36, working on edge ai and computer vision. the whole nft category (jpeg pfps, blue-chip mint drops, the aped apes) sat outside my professional attention. really though, i watched the 2021 bull market from a distance, the way most engineers who were not crypto-native watched it, a mix of interest in the coordination technology and skepticism about the specific artifacts changing hands. i knew nftfi as a name from ethereum-scaling twitter, the collateralized-lending piece of the nft economy that had a working revenue model when most nft infrastructure did not.

the platform launched in may 2020, before the nft bull ran, back when a bored ape was still a mint away. stephen young and his team out of cape town built it as a marketplace where nft owners could put up a token as collateral for a short-term eth loan. the mechanism was simple. a borrower listed an nft. lenders offered terms (loan amount, duration, apr). borrower accepted an offer. the nft went into a smart-contract escrow. the eth went to the borrower. if repayment came in on time the nft returned. if it did not the nft transferred to the lender.

the 2021-2022 bull market was the window. eth was expensive and nfts were expensive so borrowers with real illiquid positions had a reason to unlock capital without selling their bored ape or their cryptopunk. lenders with eth on the sidelines could earn 20-60% apr against blue-chip collateral. by mid-2022 nftfi was the largest peer-to-peer nft lending protocol on ethereum, with parallel loans running in the thousands and a book that eventually settled past $737 million cumulative.

~ the dossier ~

BornMay 2020 on ethereum mainnet as a peer-to-peer NFT lending marketplace
Peak$737 million in cumulative loan volume across roughly 82,000 loans, largest NFT lending protocol during the 2021-2022 window
Killed31 August 2026 (frontend offline; smart contracts remain deployed on-chain for existing-loan settlement)
Lifespanabout six years and four months
Made byStephen Young and the NFTfi team out of cape town
Killed byNFT floor prices eroding, blue-chip collections losing liquidity premium, borrowers with less reason to lock up depreciating collateral

~ how the mechanism worked ~

this part i actually found interesting as a piece of financial engineering. nftfi's peer-to-peer model was distinct from the pool-based lending that later protocols (bendao, jpeg'd) built. each loan was a bilateral agreement between one specific lender and one specific borrower, negotiated on the frontend against a specific nft. the collateral valuations were set by market floor prices, but the lenders themselves priced the risk. a loan against a mid-tier bored ape at floor might get you 30% of floor at 40% apr. against a rare punk it might be 55% of floor at 25% apr.

the protocol took a 5% fee on interest earned by the lender. that was the whole revenue model, no token, no yield farming, no protocol emissions. it worked because loan volumes were high enough to make 5% of $17 million in cumulative interest a real business through 2022. by 2023 volume was already down. by 2025 the fee revenue was not enough to cover the frontend hosting and the engineering team.

~ the unraveling ~

this happened in the crypto press. blue-chip nft floors that had been 100 eth in january 2022 were 12 eth by mid-2023. the collateral value that had underwritten the whole loan book collapsed underneath. lenders got risk-averse and stopped offering terms. borrowers stopped seeing a reason to lock up collateral that might be worth less by the time the loan matured than the loan itself was for. the whole two-sided marketplace lost both sides of its liquidity at the same time.

the nftfi team pivoted in 2024 toward institutional flow (larger loans against curated collections, custody partnerships) but the addressable market had shrunk. by 2025 the total value locked was down to a rounding-error version of the 2022 peak. the pfp collections nftfi had been built to lend against were mostly not clearing any secondary volume at all.

~ the actual end ~

the shutdown announcement went up in mid-2026. new loans stopped immediately. existing borrowers had until 31 july 2026 to refinance any loan they wanted to extend. after 31 july, existing loans continued to run under their original terms but no new borrowing was possible. on 31 august 2026 the nftfi.com frontend went offline.

the smart contracts stayed on chain. anyone with an existing loan could still repay it and reclaim collateral through direct contract interaction, and the discord stayed open through the wind-down for support. this is roughly the pattern crypto protocols use when they close: kill the frontend, leave the contracts running, let the last positions settle on-chain until the eth gas costs of doing so exceed the value of the positions themselves. by autumn 2026 the last active positions on the nftfi contracts had mostly closed out.

~ what got buried with it ~

what buried nftfi was that peer-to-peer collateralized lending against depreciating illiquid collateral is a working business model at exactly one market condition (the collateral appreciates faster than the interest rate) and once that condition inverts the entire mechanism unwinds. the wider nft-lending category is mostly dead by 2026, bendao converted to a pool-based lending protocol for more liquid collateral and jpeg'd is on a maintenance-only shape. the nftfi contracts on-chain are a museum piece of the 2020-2022 window when jpegs were collateral.
