~ the goodbye ~
i missed makersplace at its peak because i was not a buyer of crypto art. the platform was founded in 2018 in san francisco by dannie chu and yash nelapati, two ex-pinterest engineers, with ryoma ito as the third co-founder. the pitch was curated rare digital art on ethereum, with limited editions signed by the artist's keypair, sold for hundreds to hundreds of thousands of dollars a piece.
they were three years early. then march 2021 happened. beeple's "everydays: the first 5000 days" sold through christie's for $69.3 million in mid-march, and makersplace had been the minting venue. for a few weeks every art collector with internet was a potential customer.
august 2021 they closed a $30 million series a co-led by bessemer venture partners and pantera capital. coinbase ventures and sony music wrote checks, as did eminem and paul rosenberg. they hired hard and ran high-end drops. for a window the rare-digital-art tier of nfts looked like it might become a permanent category alongside auction houses.

~ what it was ~
makersplace was always the curated tier, never the open-floor opensea-style marketplace. each artist had to be approved to mint. each work was signed cryptographically by the creator. the buy-side audience was meant to be galleries and serious collectors, not flippers chasing the next bored ape.
the design choice meant lower volume than opensea but higher price-per-piece. it also meant the marketplace depended on a small number of high-end transactions per month rather than the long tail. when those transactions stopped, there was nothing to soft-land on.
~ the decline ~
nft trading volume fell from a 2021 peak of about $2.9 billion across the market to around $23.8 million by early 2025. the curated tier got hit hardest. flippers had been the volume; collectors paused. makersplace ran for two years through the bear in maintenance mode but the math did not get better.
~ the day it died ~
on 17 january 2025 makersplace announced an immediate exit. new accounts were disabled the same day. a transfer tool would launch in february to let existing collectors move their nfts off-platform until june. unused customer funds went back to investors. employees got severance and the company wound up.
the press release stayed dry. the nft trend has vanished was the underlying sentence, even if those exact words were not used. eight months later christie's eliminated its own digital art department after a year of auctions where nothing crossed $400k.
~ what remains ~
the beeple sale will keep being referenced for as long as people argue about nfts, and makersplace will be the footnote that did the minting. the marketplace itself joined a graveyard already populated by nifty gateway and knownorigin, with async art arriving the same year. the curated-art tier of nfts now looks like a 2021-2024 product-category boundary condition rather than the start of a new auction-house model.
