Volition

1996 - 2023
dead us
the studio that made saints row, plus red faction and freespace before that, then got passed through thq and koch and deep silver and embracer for twenty-seven years before embracer's post-savvy-games restructuring killed it on august 31 2023. 183 people were laid off the day the lights went out. the saints row reboot the year before had not sold well enough to protect the building.

~ the obituary ~

volition was the kind of pc game studio you noticed only if you played the games they made. for most of their twenty-seven years they were a building in champaign illinois making a game with somebody else's logo on the box. their name was not on the marquee. you might have played descent freespace in 1998 without knowing volition existed at all. you might have played red faction in 2001 and remembered it was a thq game. saints row is the only series where the studio name reliably came up, and even then mostly inside gaming press.

mike kulas founded the studio in november 1996. he had spent three years at parallax software working on descent, the 6dof shooter you played on a 486 with a sound blaster. half the parallax crew went west to make descent 3, half stayed in champaign to do something new. volition was the half that stayed. their first ship was descent freespace in 1998, the space combat game serious pc players still bring up in 2026 when somebody asks what happened to the space sim. red faction followed in 2001, with destructible-terrain tech years ahead of anything else on the shelf, alongside the summoner rpgs on the ps2 around the same window. in 2006 they shipped saints row, the open-world game that started out aping gta and eventually became the only big open-world franchise willing to be openly stupid on purpose.

they were bought by thq in august 2000 for around twenty million dollars in stock. thq went bankrupt in 2012. volition was picked up by koch media for $22.3 million in january 2013, sat inside deep silver for a while, got rolled into embracer when embracer absorbed koch in 2018, briefly passed to gearbox in late 2022, then got handed back to embracer again, then closed on august 31 2023. 183 employees were laid off that day, after the saints row reboot the year before had received a soft reception and embracer's $2 billion savvy-games deal with saudi arabia had collapsed earlier in 2023. one bad quarter for a 9 billion dollar parent company turned into the end of a building that had been making pc games since the windows 95 era.

~ the climb ~

the early volition work has aged better than most of their peers from the same window. freespace 2 in 1999 is still cited as the high point of the pc space-combat genre, in the same sentence that explains why nobody made another one for a decade. red faction's geomod engine in 2001, which let you blow tunnels through level geometry with a rocket launcher, was the kind of tech demo most studios would have built a single game around. volition built three games around it and then moved on. by the time saints row hit on the xbox 360 in 2006 the studio had already been quietly carrying multiple distinct franchises for almost a decade. that breadth was the asset thq actually paid for, even though the thq-era press releases all focused on saints row.

~ what really happened ~

the saints row reboot in august 2022 was the proximate trigger. embracer had spent the previous five years buying every studio it could, on a thesis that scale plus a pipeline of mid-budget games would beat the publishers betting on a handful of hundred-million-dollar releases. saints row 2022 was that thesis on the shelf. it shipped to mixed reviews, sold below internal targets, and went on sale faster than embracer wanted. in may 2023 the company's two billion dollar deal with saudi arabia's savvy games group fell through, and the whole acquisition strategy unwound in public. embracer announced a one-year restructuring program in june. by august, volition was shut. the building closed on the same date kulas had founded the studio twenty-seven years earlier.

~ what replaced it ~

saints row sits dormant inside embracer, which has said nothing useful about the ip since the closure. red faction is in the same drawer. freespace has been frozen for so long that its small but loud community has been maintaining their own open-source engine, fs2_open, for over twenty years, longer than the studio itself was alive after freespace 2 shipped. several ex-volition leads moved to other deep silver studios, others started small new outfits in the same illinois college town, others left games entirely. the building is empty in 2026. the games are still out there, mostly playable through gog. champaign illinois lost a hundred and eighty pc-gaming jobs that it is unlikely to get back.
