Yumeiro Cast

2015 - 2019

six weeks separated the third anniversary broadcast from the shutdown notice, which is the whole emotional arc of a live-service game compressed into a single autumn. sega closed it on 15 january 2019 at 13:59. the strange part is everything after: an offline archive app in 2024, then the voice cast back on a tokyo stage in january 2026 for a game that had not accepted a login in seven years.

~ the obituary ~

On 28 September 2018 Yumeiro Cast ran a third-anniversary broadcast at nine in the evening, off the back of a special site that had opened a month earlier with a free ten-pull gacha campaign. Six weeks later, on 9 November, Sega announced that the game would close. Forty-two days separated the party from the paperwork.

The game had launched on 29 September 2015, built and operated by Sega Games with Mynet, and the conceit was a theater. You were the scriptwriter. The cast were stage actors with their own careers and grudges, and the rhythm sections were performances you had written for them, which is a more specific premise than most games in this category bother with. Over three years it staged King Lear and brought back a Sakura Wars collaboration.

Service ended on 15 January 2019 at 13:59. Sega Games filed the statutory refund notice for unused 夢石, the paid stones, and the claim window ran from the next day through 29 March. That document is the cleanest death certificate the game has, because it is the one piece of paper a Japanese operator is legally obliged to publish when it retires prepaid value.

~ what the cast kept ~

Games like this one are made for Japanese women in their twenties and thirties and sold on the voice cast. The cast is the asset. Kenichi Suzumura voiced one of the leads. Birthday events for individual characters were scheduled like real calendar dates and streamed on Niconico, and the players organized around those dates the way you organize around a friend's birthday rather than around a patch note.

I am not the audience and never was. Geography is barely the issue here; this was built for a specific readership with a specific relationship to its performers. The structure is still legible from outside it. If the product is the performers, the product does not die when the servers do, and everything that followed here depends on exactly that.

~ the part that kept going ~

The game was dead in January 2019 and the brand carried on regardless. Valentine's sweets went up for pre-order on 31 January 2020. A collaboration with the karaoke chain Karaoke no Tetsujin opened across five Tokyo branches on 18 February 2020 and ran until 18 April. In September 2020 there was a photo report from a Yumeiro Cast collaboration at a capsule hotel in Akihabara, twenty months after the last login, none of which required a server to be running.

~ the curtain call ~

On 29 September 2024, nine years to the day after launch, an app called 夢色キャスト TAKE A CURTAIN CALL appeared. It was an offline archive: some of the game's content, playable, with nothing to connect to and nothing to buy. The release was framed from the start as time-limited rather than permanent.

This is still rare. The default ending for a game of this shape is that the app stops working and the content becomes screenshots, and almost no Japanese publisher goes back five years later to build a read-only version. Somebody at Sega made a case for it internally and won.

~ the ninth year ~

On 10 January 2026 Nissho Hall in Tokyo hosted Yumeiro Cast 10th Anniversary Dream☆Festival, two performances in one day, organized by Sotsu and streamed live for people who could not get tickets. Seven cast members appeared together for the first time in about nine years, for a reading and a live set. The game they were celebrating had been switched off for seven years by then, and the audience in that hall bought tickets anyway.
