~ the eulogy ~
the sierra logo was on the half-life box in 1998. that is how a lot of pc players my age first met the brand, after the king's quest and leisure suit larry era it had built itself on was already winding down. sierra was the largest us adventure-game publisher of the 80s and 90s. by 2008 the brand had been dissolved by activision and the founders had been gone for almost a decade.
the company started in 1979 as on-line systems, founded by ken williams and roberta williams out of their home in simi valley, california. roberta wrote mystery house in 1980, the first adventure game with graphics on the apple ii. the company renamed itself sierra on-line in 1982 and moved to oakhurst in the sierra nevada foothills, which is where the brand picked up its name. through the 80s the catalog grew on roberta's king's quest series, al lowe's leisure suit larry, jane jensen's gabriel knight, the space quest series from the two guys from andromeda, and the police quest series from jim walls.
cuc international bought sierra in february 1996 for around one billion dollars in stock. cuc merged with hfs corporation in 1997 to form cendant, and the cendant accounting scandal that broke in april 1998 wiped out most of the sierra acquisition value. ken williams left the company by the end of 1998. by then sierra had also been picked up by havas interactive after the cendant breakup, and havas itself was folded into vivendi universal in 2000.
through the vivendi years the sierra name continued as a publishing label for half-life (developed by valve, published by sierra studios from 1998 through 2004), homeworld (developed by relic), tribes 2, and gabriel knight 3. the in-house adventure-game development was wound down around 1999. sierra was formally disestablished as a company on august 24 2004 when vivendi games reorganized the catalog. when activision merged with vivendi games in july 2008 to form activision blizzard, the sierra name went with it and was shelved by the end of 2008.

~ the adventure-game inheritance ~
the king's quest line, started in 1984 by roberta williams, was the defining sierra series and the one that set the third-person animated-adventure format. each game shipped with a heavy cluebook market on the side, since the puzzles were brutal and the death animations were many. those death animations were a sierra signature. you would mistype one command and watch the protagonist fall off a cliff with a custom animation. modern designers consider that hostile design now, but at the time it was part of the deal.
~ the half-life pivot ~
sierra studios published half-life in november 1998 and it sold more copies than any single sierra adventure game had ever sold. it also reset the brand's identity for the next six years from king's quest publisher to fps publisher. counter-strike, the half-life mod that became its own retail product in 2000, was sold under the sierra label in the us. when vivendi games and valve's contract dispute reached arbitration in 2005 valve won the rights to self-publish on steam, and that was the end of sierra's involvement with the half-life line.
~ what activision did with the brand ~
activision revived the sierra label in 2014 as a downloadable-game publishing line for indie titles and adventure-game re-releases. it shipped a new geometry wars title and an episodic king's quest reboot across 2015 and 2016 before going quiet. as of 2026 the brand is not actively publishing anything new. the original sierra catalog now lives on gog.com under licensing deals between activision blizzard and the gog store.
