Visual Studio App Center

2017 - 2025
dead
app center was microsoft's attempt to package every step of mobile app delivery (build, test, distribute, analytics, push, crash reports) into one cloud service. it descended from hockeyapp, a stuttgart startup microsoft bought in december 2014. app center retired on 31 march 2025. the underlying features moved to github actions and azure devops, with the diagnostics piece surviving as azure monitor until 2027.

~ the obituary ~

the lineage starts in stuttgart. four engineers (andreas linde, stefan haubold, thomas dohmke, and michael simmons) launched hockeyapp in 2011 under their company bit stadium gmbh. the product solved a real problem for ios developers: how to push a beta build to a tester's iphone without going through apple's slow testflight process, and how to collect the crash report when the build inevitably blew up. android support followed, then windows phone. by 2014 it was the standard ad-hoc distribution tool for mobile teams that did not want to wait for the app store.

microsoft announced the hockeyapp acquisition on 11 december 2014 under s. somasegar's developer division. the price was not disclosed. the strategic logic was clear: visual studio was the windows-first ide trying to become the cross-platform mobile ide, and hockeyapp was the missing piece. the stuttgart team kept running the product as hockeyapp for two more years.

at connect() 2016 microsoft announced visual studio mobile center, a new dashboard that bundled the hockeyapp services with build, test, and analytics. the rebrand to visual studio app center happened in november 2017 with general availability. hockeyapp itself was put on a retirement track and shut down on 16 november 2018, with its customers migrated to app center. for a few years after that, app center was the canonical way for a mobile team to run ci, distribute internal builds, and look at crash dumps without writing their own pipeline.

i never used app center directly. by 2017 i was working on edge computer vision for unmanned aerial systems in ankara, where the deployment target was not a phone app but a flight computer with a custom yocto image. mobile devops sat outside my stack. i tracked app center the way an engineer tracks any major developer tool, by reading the launch posts and never opening the console.

~ the climb ~

between 2018 and 2022 app center grew steadily inside the microsoft developer ecosystem. it integrated with vsts (later azure devops), then with github after the 2018 github acquisition, then with app store connect on apple's side. the diagnostics piece (app center analytics) competed with firebase and amplitude. the build pipeline competed with bitrise and circleci. for shops already on microsoft's developer stack, the bundling was the selling point.

~ the slide ~

github actions launched in november 2019 and made hosted ci free for open source and cheap for everyone else. azure pipelines kept improving. firebase ate most of the mobile analytics traffic that did not go to mixpanel or amplitude. app center had no piece left that was not better served by something else inside microsoft's own walls. the rebuild started internally around 2022 and the kill date was set in early 2024.

~ the postmortem ~

on 28 april 2024 microsoft posted the visual studio app center retirement notice. the date was 31 march 2025. teams were told to migrate build and distribution to github actions, push notifications to azure notification hubs, and analytics to azure monitor application insights. the analytics and diagnostics subset got an extension to 30 june 2026, then a second extension to 31 march 2027. the rest of app center went dark on 31 march 2025 as scheduled.

~ the inheritance ~

hockeyapp had been a product for seven years. app center was a product for seven and a half. the stuttgart team's original problem (how to get a beta build to a tester without waiting for apple) is now solved by testflight, firebase app distribution, and a half-dozen github action workflows. the dashboard that wrapped it all into one tab is gone. sits in the recent microsoft developer-tool graveyard next to [[microsoft-stream-classic]] and [[microsoft-mover]] as part of the post-azure-devops consolidation wave.
