Legendas.TV

2006 - 2022
dead brazil
half the price of a big mac a month was what the team asked for in october 2019, when it first said it would close. it got three more years. legendas.tv had opened on 6 november 2006, a month after the federal police shut the sites it replaced, and by 2019 it held more than 350,000 subtitles for 50,000 titles, all made by volunteers for nothing. on 9 december 2022 the front page became a farewell letter that promised the archive would follow. it never did, and the letter is still what the domain serves.

~ the eulogy ~

The site was one month old when it first explained itself. A notice dated 6 December 2006 says that exactly a month earlier, on 6 November, the Legendas.TV portal had gone online, and it gives the counts: 11,418 subtitles and 66,209 members, with what it called an incredible eight million page views a day. The reason it existed sat in the previous month's news. In October 2006 the Federal Police had gone after the Brazilian sites that linked to episodes and subtitles, LegendaZ among them, and Legendas.TV was built in the gap they left.

Turkey's version of this was DivxPlanet, with the same volunteer teams and the same argument about what a subtitle file even is, and it closed in 2017 for the reason this one eventually would: servers cost money and translators do not. A Brazilian Portuguese archive was never going to be of any use to me, but the shape of the thing is familiar from home.

It was run by people who never published their names. In 2009 the team turned down the idea of a bank account for donations because it would expose the people responsible, and when the anti-piracy association APCM got the American host to drop the site on 1 February 2009, it moved to a data center in Sweden, on a server it said was guaranteed by The Pirate Bay. A fundraiser that year aimed at 10,000 reais and passed it by 3,000 in 33 hours. The subtitles came from volunteer teams with names of their own, who timed Brazilian Portuguese dialog to specific releases and were never paid.

The first warning came in October 2019. Between the captures of 2 and 4 October the front page grew a box reading O LTV VAI FECHAR, the LTV is going to close, followed by a paragraph admitting that readers had seen this kind of blackmail before and insisting that this time it was serious. The ask was a VIP subscription at ten reais a month, half a Big Mac, it said. Two weeks later a forum post titled Passado, presente e futuro gave the site six months to find a solution, with a promise that the last act, if it came to that, would be to release the subtitle database to the public, because the LTV archive belonged to its users.

~ hoje essa jornada se encerra ~

The end came without the six-month notice. The last working capture is 28 November 2022. From 3 December the site said only Estamos em manutenção, we are under maintenance, and on 9 December at 22:18 GMT the maintenance page was replaced by a letter. Hoje essa jornada se encerra, it said. Today this journey ends; Legendas.TV as we know it ceases to exist. It listed the causes in one sentence, and all of them were money. Contributions had fallen while costs and the dollar had risen, and advertising was impossible given how the world saw a community like this one. It also said the market had caught up, with streaming services more accessible every year.

Manual do Usuário had it on the 10th and Estadão two days later, and the comment threads went the way comment threads go, half mourning and half pointing at OpenSubtitles. The letter promised the archive would be made available over the following weeks, in a simple but functional way.

~ the archive that did not arrive ~

It was not. Every capture of legendas.tv from 9 December 2022 to September 2026 is the same farewell page, apart from one day in June 2023 when an expired DNS notice showed instead. No dump was ever posted and nothing under the name exists on the Internet Archive. A Brazilian outlet writing in August 2026 listed the promise as something that did not happen.

The subtitles survive wherever they were mirrored, which is almost everywhere. What the site had that the mirrors do not is sixteen years of who translated what, and that went dark with the domain. The domain itself still answers on http, with the same title and the same goodbye.
