Spotify Greenroom was a live-audio app that Spotify launched in June 2021 after buying Betty Labs for about fifty million dollars. Betty Labs had been running a small sports-talk app called Locker Room since October 2020, but Spotify wanted a Clubhouse competitor more than it wanted Locker Room specifically. The team and the technology got absorbed. The product got rebranded as Greenroom and the launch went global from day one with Spotify's full marketing surface behind it.

The bet was on social audio as a category. Clubhouse had peaked in early 2021 and Twitter Spaces had just launched. Facebook and Discord were also moving into the same space at the same time. Spotify's pitch was that an audio company should own the social side of audio, and Greenroom was the implementation of that pitch. Rooms could be public or private. Hosts could record sessions and turn them into recorded podcasts later, and there was a sponsored creator fund attached for power users.

By mid-2022 the entire category was already collapsing. Clubhouse was laying people off and Twitter Spaces never grew past a thin niche. Spotify rebranded Greenroom to Spotify Live in March 2022, but the rebrand could not save the product. On April 4 2023 Spotify announced the shutdown. The app went dark on April 30. Some pieces of the technology survived as a live-Q&A feature inside the main Spotify podcast app, but the standalone product was done.

Greenroom's peak years overlap with my early forties, and by then i had spent enough time around live-audio products to know the format had a structural problem. Nobody wanted to listen to strangers talk live for an hour when the same content as a recorded podcast was always going to be shorter and tighter. I tried a Clubhouse room or two in 2021 and never went back. Greenroom was the same product with a different label. The Turkish audience for it was effectively zero from the start.

~ the climb ~

Spotify launched Greenroom with sports as the wedge. Locker Room had been a sports-talk app, and Spotify already owned the rights to NBA and NFL audio content through earlier deals. The opening months had a heavy sports tilt with rooms hosted by athletes and analysts. The pivot to broader topics happened within weeks of launch, because sports-only rooms were too narrow to support a standalone app.

The creator fund was Spotify's main lever. The company set aside money to pay hosts who could draw a live audience, on the theory that a small pool of paid power users would generate the content that brought everyone else in. The economics never worked. Most rooms had tiny audiences and the fund money got spent without moving the retention curve.

~ the slide ~

By the time Spotify renamed Greenroom to Spotify Live in March 2022, the company was already deciding internally that live audio would not be a standalone product line. The rebrand was an attempt to fold the feature into Spotify's broader live-event push, which itself was being scaled back. Layoffs in October 2022 hit the original-content side hard. By early 2023 the math no longer supported running a separate app.

~ the actual end ~

The April 4 2023 announcement was short. Spotify said the standalone Live app would be discontinued on April 30, with the live-Q&A feature folded into the main Spotify app for podcast creators who wanted it. The Greenroom domain stayed up as a redirect for a while, then went away. Most users of the app had already churned out by then, so the shutdown landed without much public notice. The category was the bigger story: by mid-2023 the social-audio moment was over and Greenroom was the cleanest casualty of it.
