~ the last words ~
wretch was the part of asian web history i can read about but never have any first-hand memory of. taiwan in the 2000s had its own web 2.0 ecosystem in mandarin chinese, and i was on a turkish ttnet line in ankara reading donanimhaber forums. wretch belongs in the same regional cluster as cyworld in korea and mixi in japan: huge inside its country, almost invisible from anywhere else, and erased completely in the same five-year window that took the rest of the local-social-network class with it.
the site started in 1999 as a bbs called 無名小站, "nameless little site," running on a server inside national chiao tung university in hsinchu. chien chih-yu was an undergraduate in the computer science department at the time. the bbs grew steadily through the early 2000s. in 2003 the team added a blog service plus a photo album product, and the membership crossed 200,000 in 2004. the commercial entity wretch co. ltd. was formed in 2005 to handle the load and keep the lights on. by 2006 it was the largest taiwanese-language platform in its category.
yahoo taiwan acquired wretch for $22 million in december 2006, the biggest yahoo taiwan deal since kimo.com.tw a few years earlier. the integration kept the brand and urls intact while plugging in yahoo accounts, with wretch running as the social arm of yahoo taiwan through the late 2000s. then facebook arrived in taiwan and absorbed the local-social-network category, the same migration that hollowed out cyworld in korea and orkut in brazil. yahoo announced the shutdown in august 2013. operations ended on december 26, 2013. photo albums and blog posts that had been the public memory of a generation of taiwanese teenagers went offline that night.

~ what it was ~
wretch's photo album was the killer feature. it was free, it had no real upload limits for the time, and it became the default place for taiwanese students to post school trip albums plus the photo-of-the-day vanity uploads that defined late-2000s asian social internet. the blog was a second pillar, with templates that let users skin their pages in a way reminiscent of cyworld's minihompy. message boards rounded out the package. for half a decade the answer to "where did you put those photos" was "wretch."
~ the fall ~
yahoo's content acquisitions across asia in the late 2000s mostly went the same way. yahoo would buy a popular regional site, integrate it into the yahoo accounts system, leave the product to drift, then announce a wind-down once usage dropped past some internal threshold. wretch followed that arc. there were no major feature releases under yahoo. the team that had built the photo album ran lean on maintenance. when facebook took taiwan around 2010, wretch had no answer.
the august 2013 shutdown announcement gave users about four months to download their data. the export tool worked but was slow. backups were patchy. when the servers went off on december 26, large amounts of content disappeared without ever being archived properly. the chinese-language taiwanese internet of 2005 to 2010 has a wretch-shaped hole in it.
~ the long tail ~
in january 2019 a small revival site appeared at the original domain that let former users recover their photo albums and blog posts via the old account system. it was a partial rescue. some content came back, some did not. the recovery site was treated by taiwanese press as a 10-year-challenge moment, with users posting before-and-after screenshots of their teenage-era pages. it is not the same product. wretch the social network ended in 2013. what runs at the domain now is an archive that some people can dig into when they want to look at who they used to be.
