microsoft stream launched on june 20 2017 as a corporate video-sharing service for office 365 tenants. it replaced office 365 video, which itself had only shipped in 2014. for five years it was the place where the recording of the quarterly all-hands ended up and where the training department uploaded compliance videos. microsoft announced in november 2020 that it was rebuilding stream on top of sharepoint, the original service got renamed stream (classic). uploads stopped on may 15 2023, read access stopped on october 15 2023. the service was fully retired on february 15 2024.

~ the eulogy ~

stream classic was the kind of office 365 sub-product that only existed inside the corporate intranet. it was where the recording of last quarter's town hall lived. you got an email with a stream.microsoft.com link from someone in HR or comms, you clicked through and the player loaded a fifty-minute video your manager wanted you to have watched. nobody opened the stream portal on purpose. it was a delivery surface for links that arrived in other channels.

the product launched on june 20 2017 as the replacement for office 365 video, which itself had only existed since 2014. office 365 video was sharepoint with a video player nailed on, stream was meant to be a real video application with search and auto-captioning. for a couple of years it shipped along the office 365 roadmap on its own cadence. there were apps for windows and the two mobile platforms. the web portal looked like a corporate youtube knockoff with teams integration nailed in for embedded playback.

microsoft announced in november 2020 that the whole thing was going to be rebuilt. the new product was called stream on sharepoint, where videos would be stored as ordinary sharepoint files inside onedrive or a sharepoint document library, with the stream branding becoming a player layered on top. the original product was retroactively renamed stream (classic), which is when the obituary was effectively written. the classic version started its three-year wind-down toward the february 2024 retirement.

~ how it landed ~

inside the corporate use case it actually worked. the auto-generated captions covered english and a slowly growing list of other languages including turkish by 2021. the search index let you find a clip by the words someone said inside it, which was the one feature that made the product worth using if you were trying to find a thirty-second segment of a two-hour recording. permissioning was tenant-scoped by default, you could share a video with the whole company or with a specific security group.

outside the corporate use case it did not have one. consumer video stayed on youtube and internal-team scratch videos stayed inside teams chat. training departments mostly defaulted to whatever lms they already had. stream sat in the office 365 launcher next to [[office-mix]] and a dozen other tiles that most employees clicked through once and then never again. by the time microsoft announced the migration in late 2020 the team building it had effectively been redirected to the sharepoint-based successor.

~ the slow shutdown ~

the retirement schedule was the cleanest part of stream classic's life. microsoft published the timeline in early 2023. uploads to the classic portal stopped on may 15 2023, which forced any team still posting recordings to switch to stream on sharepoint. read access stopped on october 15 2023, by which point an admin had to run a migration script to move all the existing classic videos into onedrive or sharepoint document libraries. the portal was fully retired on february 15 2024, the urls redirected to a migration help page for another quarter and then went away.

~ the next chapter ~

the videos themselves mostly survived through the migration. an admin who ran the move-to-sharepoint tooling before october 2023 kept everything, anyone who waited past the cutoff lost access. the corporate video portal as a concept was absorbed into the broader sharepoint and teams surfaces, which is closer to how youtube and google drive coexist than to how a standalone video portal had been positioned. stream classic sits beside [[skype-for-business]] and [[yammer]] in the small museum of office 365 sub-products that microsoft rationalized once teams absorbed the rest of the suite.
