khoros was an austin texas enterprise social-customer-experience SaaS, formed by the january 2019 merger of lithium technologies and spredfast. lithium ran community-forum software for big brands since 2001. spredfast did social media management since 2008. the merged company sold a stack covering brand communities, social listening, agent routing, customer-care escalation. IgniteTech acquired khoros in may 2025. by june 21 2025 the new owner had laid off 116 staff, more than 60% of the workforce, citing a pivot to AI-first automation.

~ the last words ~

in 2019 i was working on computer vision in ankara on a job that did not touch the social customer experience stack. khoros was an enterprise B2B SaaS, the buyer profile was a brand-marketing director at a large retail or financial services company, the product never reached the consumer surface in a way that an outside engineer like me would notice. i learned the brand existed in 2025 when the IgniteTech acquisition cleared the layoff threshold for tech-press headlines.

this is mostly told from the austin post and the startupwired writeup. khoros formed on january 22 2019 from a vista equity partners-led merger of two austin software companies. lithium technologies had been around since 2001, originally building community-forum software for video-game brands, then expanding into enterprise customer care. spredfast was newer, founded in 2008, doing social media campaign management and listening. vista bundled them under the khoros brand with the pitch that brand communities and social listening and care routing belonged in one stack.

the khoros pitch had a decent fit for the 2019-2022 cycle. brands needed a single dashboard for social customer care across twitter and facebook and instagram, plus a community-forum tier for self-service support, plus an analytics layer underneath. khoros sold to large enterprise accounts in financial services and retail and telecom. it claimed 200+ enterprise customers at the peak. the staff count crossed 2000 at the merger.

this happened in real time, the late-stage private equity arc was always going to be the exit. vista had owned lithium for years before the merger, the spredfast roll-up was supposed to lift the multiple ahead of an eventual sale. the 2024-2025 enterprise SaaS environment did not produce a clean strategic buyer. IgniteTech, a joseph liemandt rollup vehicle, picked up khoros in may 2025. on june 21 2025 austin post reported the new owner had laid off 116 staff, more than 60% of the workforce. the framing was an AI-first automation pivot. the substance was a standard private-equity gut.

~ what got merged into khoros ~

lithium technologies built its reputation on community-forum software through the 2000s. the forums for sprint and at&t and best buy customer support all ran on the lithium engine for years. the model was that a peer-to-peer answer in a brand community deflected a support ticket and cost the brand a fraction of the live-agent rate. that math worked for any company with a high-volume support load.

spredfast was a 2008 austin startup, founded by ex-coremetrics and ex-bazaarvoice operators, that built one of the early social media management dashboards. it competed with hootsuite and sprinklr through the early 2010s. vista bought it in 2018 and combined it with lithium the next year. the khoros brand was the cleanup name for both. neither legacy product line kept its own roadmap after the merger.

~ the rollup that ended it ~

this is mostly told from the layoff coverage. IgniteTech is a holding company built around the rollup-and-extract playbook: acquire a SaaS company past its growth peak, cut headcount aggressively, push the remaining customers onto a thinner support tier, run the recurring revenue as a yield asset for as long as the contracts renew. by 2025 IgniteTech had run the playbook through dozens of acquisitions including aurea and jive software (or roughly).

khoros was an obvious IgniteTech target: vista equity portfolio aging out, large enterprise customer base on multi-year contracts, fat headcount under the merger. the may 2025 deal closed quietly. the june 21 layoffs cleared 116 austin staff in one round, more than 60% of the total. the AI-first automation pitch was the framing IgniteTech needed for the analyst quotes. the customer-care product line survived in skeleton form. the brand community engine kept running. the company that built either tier no longer existed in any recognizable way.
