~ the goodbye ~
i missed lbry. crypto-native video hosting was a category i watched from the outside during the 2016 to 2021 window. jeremy kauffman and jimmy kiselak launched lbry incorporated out of new hampshire in may 2015, betting that the youtube alternative was going to arrive as a blockchain protocol with named creators owning their video urls at the chain layer. the pitch was decentralized, but the actual tech stack was mostly a normal centralized web frontend on top of a purpose-built cryptocurrency (the lbc token) plus content-addressable storage. what most users saw was a website that felt like a rougher youtube with a wallet in the corner.
lbry's traction curve had one visible spike, the late 2020 to early 2021 window when odysee, the video frontend built by the same team, started growing on political-content deplatforming from youtube. new user signups jumped roughly 250 percent in january 2021 according to the company's own numbers. by april 2021 odysee hosted around 10 million videos and the userbase leaned heavily on creators who had lost youtube monetization or accounts. that was lbry's cultural moment.
the technical layer was interesting from a computer-engineer angle but never reached a scale where the decentralization was actually load-bearing. odysee served the same videos through the same cdn a centralized site would. the blockchain part was where you paid or claimed a name for a channel. the rest was normal http.

| Peak | january 2021 sign-up spike (roughly 250 percent month-over-month), around 10 million videos on Odysee by april 2021 |
| Killed | october 2023 wind-down after the July 2023 SEC fine, following the 7 November 2022 summary judgment |
| Lifespan | 8 years and 5 months |
| Made by | LBRY Inc |
| Killed by | SEC v. LBRY unregistered-securities suit filed 29 march 2021 |
~ how it landed ~
the split between lbry (the parent corp holding the protocol and the token) and odysee (the consumer video frontend) got formalized on 1 october 2021. odysee became a separate corporate entity with its own ceo, which in retrospect was preparation for the parent company taking legal fire. odysee kept the videos and the users. lbry inc kept the protocol code and the sec case.
~ the decline ~
on 29 march 2021 the sec filed a complaint against lbry inc alleging that lbc, the token, had been sold as an unregistered security. the argument was standard howey-test territory. lbry raised money by selling the token to buyers who reasonably expected the token to gain value from lbry's own development work, therefore lbc was a security under the standard framework. lbry fought back publicly and legally. the counter-argument was that lbc was a functional utility token used to pay for chain operations rather than an investment contract.
the court did not buy it. on 7 november 2022 the district court in new hampshire granted summary judgment for the sec. the ruling was widely read inside crypto as one of the first clean us federal wins against a specific altcoin issuer. lbry's remaining leverage was the size of the fine.
~ what really happened ~
the fine landed in july 2023, smaller than the sec had asked for but still fatal to lbry inc's balance sheet. within weeks the company announced it would wind down. by october 2023 lbry incorporated had effectively ceased operations. the protocol code stayed public and the chain kept producing blocks under community node operators, but the company that had funded the developer team was gone.
odysee kept running through this whole window and is still online in 2026 under forward research after a 2024 acquisition. that survival is why lbry is not remembered as a total shutdown by most users. the frontend they used never went dark. the company behind it did.
