~ the obituary ~
i did not work in the orbit of mesh. enterprise mixed reality on teams was a us megacorp pitch, not something an edge ai engineer in ankara was going to be asked to deploy. the few times i saw the demos on youtube the avatars looked like they had no legs and the rooms looked like ikea showrooms with the brightness turned down. i was running yolo on uav footage at the time. that was the part of computer vision i lived in.
mesh launched as a preview on march 2 2021 when alex kipman walked onto the ignite stage and demoed a holographic james cameron joining him in a shared volumetric space. kipman was the hololens guy, and mesh was meant to be the platform layer for any device, not just the hololens visor. the technical bones came from altspacevr, the vr social platform microsoft had bought in 2017. mesh sat under teams and under unity, and the goal was for the same avatar to appear inside both.
general availability slipped to october 2024, by which point the mesh app had been folded into microsoft teams as the "immersive spaces" feature. you could host a team meeting where everyone showed up as a chest-up avatar in a virtual conference room with whiteboards on the walls. on december 1 2025 microsoft retired mesh and the teams immersive spaces feature alongside it. the register read the move as a sign that the copilot era had no remaining budget for the metaverse era.

~ how it landed ~
the mesh announcement in march 2021 lived inside the same news cycle as the facebook horizon workrooms preview and the zuckerberg "we are now a metaverse company" rebrand later that year. microsoft was the credible enterprise side of that pitch: hololens already had real customers in industrial training and field service, and mesh was supposed to be the pipe that fed those customers into office collaboration too. for a moment in 2021 the press wrote about it as if microsoft had a head start.
the head start did not convert. the hololens 3 program was cancelled in early 2023 after the army microsoft ivas contract took heat. kipman had already left microsoft in 2022. mesh kept shipping, but the visor it was originally drawn for was gone.
~ the actual product ~
in its final form mesh was two things stitched together. one was the immersive spaces feature inside teams, where you could turn a normal meeting into a 3d room where avatars sat around a table. the other was a separate mesh "events" mode for corporate town halls, where up to sixteen presenters could share a stage and hundreds of avatars sat in the audience. both required a microsoft 365 license and a teams premium add-on for some features.
the hardware floor was modest by 2024 standards. mesh ran on a normal windows 10 or 11 laptop, on a meta quest headset through a teams app, or in browser mode for guests. the hololens 2 was technically supported until 2024 but stopped being demoed long before that.
~ what really happened ~
the shutdown notice went out via the microsoft 365 admin center in autumn 2025 and the register covered it on december 2. mesh and teams immersive both stopped on december 1 2025. the official line was that customers should use the existing 2d teams meeting features instead, with no replacement immersive product on the roadmap.
the altspacevr shutdown in march 2023 had already ended the consumer side of this story. mesh ending two and a half years later closed the enterprise side. that is the entire arc of microsoft's second attempt at avatars in a shared room, from the 2017 altspacevr acquisition to the 2025 mesh retirement. the windows mixed reality home, which was a third microsoft attempt at the same idea on a different team, was retired the year before.
