HubPages

2006 - 2026

hubpages was the 2006 paul edmondson content platform that paid amateur writers a cut of adsense and amazon affiliate revenue per article. it grew to a peak of around 35 million monthly uniques before the february 2011 google panda update cratered the visibility. maven acquired it in 2018 with the niche-site spinoff strategy that kept the brand on life support. november 2025 the platform stopped accepting new content and edits. by march 2026 the wind-down was complete, ending a twenty-year run.

hubpages was the english-internet content layer i kept seeing in google results from about 2008 onwards. recipes and gadget reviews and how-to articles on every consumer topic anyone might type into a search box, all hosted on subdomains under hubpages.com with the same template. i never wrote on it. i was a comp eng student in ankara on ttnet adsl and the platform's whole pitch was monetizing english-language articles for adsense dollars, which is not the corner of the internet i was building anything in.

the company started 5 august 2006. paul edmondson founded it with two other ex-microsoft engineers out of san francisco. the product was modular hubs composed of capsules: text capsules, photo capsules, link capsules and polls, all slotted together. writers earned a share of adsense impressions and amazon affiliate clicks on their own hubs. the model was not new (helium and associated content had similar pitches) but hubpages picked the cleaner ui and the better revenue split.

by 2010 hubpages was pulling roughly 35 million unique visitors per month. the writers were a mix of retired teachers, hobbyist niche experts and seo-savvy operators running dozens of hubs each. some hubs paid out four or five figures a year, most paid out nothing. the platform sat alongside squidoo as the two big amateur revenue-share content sites of the late 2000s.

~ the wind-down ~

google's panda update landed february 2011. the update was specifically aimed at thin-content sites with low editorial oversight. hubpages took a direct hit. the company spent the next two years trying to recover with the subdomain strategy (moving hubs into niche-themed subsites with stronger editorial branding) but the traffic curve never came back to 2010 levels.

in 2018 maven inc acquired hubpages for an undisclosed sum that cnbc reported as a mild exit for the venture investors after twelve years. maven rebranded as the arena group in 2021 and the hubpages property continued under that umbrella. the writers stayed, the revenue share kept paying out, but the editorial direction drifted toward niche spinoff sites under separate brands.

november 2025 the company posted the announcement. no new accounts, no new content submissions and no edits to existing hubs. the earnings program would end january 15 2026, final payouts on the standard schedule. by march 2026 outstanding account matters had to be handled through [email protected], the platform itself winding down for good.

~ what it was ~

hubpages outlived squidoo by twelve years. squidoo died 2014 and got absorbed back into hubpages, which kept publishing the squidoo legacy archive alongside its own hubs. helium died 2014. associated content got bought by yahoo in 2010 and folded as yahoo voices in 2014. demand studios pivoted away from ehow's amateur-writer model around the same window. hubpages was the last big revenue-share amateur-writer platform of the late 2000s still operational into the mid-2020s.

seo case studies will keep citing the february 2011 panda update for years to come. hubpages is one of the cleanest before-and-after traffic curves in the search-engine history catalog. twenty years from launch to wind-down, fifteen of those years on a slow decline from a peak nobody saw coming and nobody got back to.
