Reddit Talk

2021 - 2023

reddit talk was reddit's clubhouse competitor. the live-audio rooms feature launched on april 19 2021 at the peak of the social-audio craze, ran for almost exactly two years, and shut down on march 21 2023. reddit said it needed time to rethink audio inside the platform. the underlying third-party audio vendor was also winding down, which made the question moot.

~ the goodbye ~

reddit talk had a two-year life that overlapped almost exactly with the clubhouse craze it was built to chase. i did not use it. i barely used clubhouse either. by spring 2021 the audio-room pattern had already started to feel like a pandemic-era social habit that would not survive normal scheduling. you needed to be in front of your phone at a specific time with nothing else to do and the willingness to listen to strangers riff about a topic. that combination held for about a year, mostly during lockdowns, and then stopped holding.

reddit announced talk on april 19 2021 in a closed beta. the format was clubhouse with subreddit context. moderators of a given subreddit could host an audio room scoped to the topic of that subreddit, regular users could listen in, and selected speakers could come on the mic. the broader rollout to more subreddits happened through june 2021. like every other major platform that year, reddit was moving fast because andreessen had funded clubhouse to a sixteen-figure valuation in january, and twitter spaces had launched in may. the conventional wisdom for a few months was that audio rooms were the next layer of social media. by the end of the year the conventional wisdom had reversed.

reddit announced the shutdown on march 9 2023. the official reason was that integrating audio into the platform would require significant work the company was not ready to do. the practical reason was that the third-party audio vendor reddit had built talk on top of was itself winding down operations, and rebuilding the stack to keep a low-traffic feature alive did not make sense. the feature went dark on march 21 2023, two years to the month after the closed beta opened.

~ the audio moment ~

the social-audio moment of late 2020 through mid-2021 is the cleanest small-bubble case in recent platform history. clubhouse was the original. twitter spaces, reddit talk, spotify greenroom, facebook live audio rooms, linkedin audio events all launched within a twelve-month window in early-to-mid 2021. each shipped before product-market fit had been established for any of them. by mid-2022 most were either dormant or in active wind-down. the shape of the bubble matched the lockdown calendar almost perfectly. travel restrictions ended, people went back to in-person socializing, and the appetite for sitting still for an hour to listen to a stranger talk evaporated.

~ the postmortem ~

reddit's march 9 2023 announcement was unusually frank. the company admitted that the audio-room feature had not produced the kind of engagement that justified continued investment, and that the third-party stack reddit talk ran on was being shut down by its own vendor. there was no migration path. there was no archive of past rooms since talk had been live-only by design. the feature was removed from the apps and the website on march 21 2023. the broader reddit platform continued exactly as before, and most reddit users did not notice the change. the cleanest legacy of reddit talk is the line in the techcrunch shutdown coverage about how it ended for two reasons at once, with the audio bubble going flat at the same moment the underlying infrastructure went away.
