~ the obituary ~
topsy was a marketing-team tool. i was on the engineering side of every job i have had, and that side did not pay for twitter analytics. the company is on this list because of what apple did to it after the acquisition, which is the part of its life that has cultural weight outside the social-media-management cubicle.
vipul ved prakash and a small founding team launched topsy in 2007 as a search engine for the social web. they had built indexing infrastructure that could keep up with twitter's growth, and they were one of a handful of companies that twitter granted full firehose access to during the 2008 to 2010 window when the api was still settling. by 2010 topsy was the place a journalist or a hedge fund went to find out what the internet had been saying about a topic in real time.
apple bought topsy in december 2013 for around two hundred and twenty-five million dollars. the press could not make sense of it at the time. apple was not a company that did social search, and the firehose contract did not transfer cleanly to a corporate owner with no consumer social product. for two years topsy continued to operate, with reduced public investment but with the firehose still flowing into apple's infrastructure. on december 15, 2015 the public website returned a redirect to apple's spotlight support page, and the topsy brand vanished.

~ the firehose ~
full firehose access was the entire game. twitter sold most analytics partners a sampled feed at one or ten percent. firehose meant every public tweet in real time, the same stream twitter's own infrastructure saw. only a tiny set of partners had it, and that asset was the only reason a two hundred and twenty-five million dollar acquisition made sense for a company that did not otherwise need a social search team.
after the acquisition apple kept the firehose flowing, presumably feeding it into siri's intent-recognition models or spotlight's suggestions backend. the public-facing tools went dormant. the firehose itself did not, until twitter's musk-era api restrictions in 2023 finally choked off the kind of partnership that topsy had relied on, eight years after the brand had already been turned off.
~ the day it died ~
the shutdown happened with no advance notice. on december 15, 2015 users who navigated to topsy.com saw a redirect to a generic apple support page about ios 9 spotlight features. the support page had nothing to do with what topsy had been. there was no farewell post and no public statement from any of the founders. inside apple, the topsy team had been folded into the spotlight org months earlier, and the brand had been on borrowed time since the integration was complete.
vipul ved prakash stayed at apple for several years before founding together ai in 2022. that company became one of the more visible distributed-inference players of the open-source-llm wave, which is a long arc from indexing tweets but recognizably the same instinct, which is that the value of an internet-scale ai system is in who controls the underlying data.
