~ the last words ~
tenbit sits in the part of internet history i can read about but was never going to remember. it was polish, made for polish teenagers in a language i cannot read. in the same late-90s window i was a teenager too, but in ankara, on a modem that climbed from 14.4k to 56k, watching a different local web grow up. every country built one of these for its kids, and poland's was called Tenbit.
this is pieced together from the polish record. Tenbit started in april 1998 as an entertainment portal aimed squarely at young people, part of Grupa ITI, one of the big polish media companies of the era. it was the sort of place a teenager went for music and a free email address, back when having your own inbox still felt like something. for a stretch of the early 2000s it was one of the sites polish kids actually lived on.
the numbers got real. by march 2004 Tenbit was pulling something like 67 million page views a month, with well over 700 thousand people passing through, which in a country of poland's size was a serious slice of the young web. that was also the year it got swallowed by Onet, the biggest polish portal, for about a million zloty. Tenbit became one property inside a much larger company, which is usually the beginning of the slow part.
then facebook. by the turn of the 2010s a walled polish portal could not hold teenagers who now had a place that spoke every language and held everyone they knew. Onet turned Tenbit's email off on the 14th of april 2012, and closed the site completely on the 31st of may. fourteen years after it started, the portal a generation of polish kids grew up on was switched off in the spring.

~ what it was ~
i met this one only as a name on a list of dead polish sites, so take the shape of it lightly. underneath, Tenbit was a portal in the old sense, a front page that tried to be a young person's whole internet, with the entertainment stuff up top and an email account to keep you coming back. its edge was never technical. it was that all of it was in polish, for kids who in the early 2000s could not assume the rest of the web spoke their language.
~ the funny part ~
the detail that makes Tenbit stick is the television show. from september 2000 it had its own late-night program on TVN, the big polish commercial channel, and it ran past 150 episodes, with a second spinoff on top of that. a website with a tv show was a very early-2000s idea, the web and the tv still circling each other, neither sure who was supposed to be promoting whom. for a while the portal was famous enough in poland to be a brand on the screen, not just in the browser.
~ the last day ~
there was no drama at the end, only arithmetic and a bigger owner. Onet had a portfolio to prune and a teen portal that facebook had already emptied out. the email went first, in april, which is always the crueler cut, since an email address is the thing people forget they still depend on. the site followed six weeks later. the domain that had been a polish teenager's home page for over a decade just stopped answering.
