Neopets ran a site-wide plot called Operation: Petpet Park from 4 September 2008 to 28 October 2008, and the whole thing was an advertisement for a game that did not exist yet. Petpet Park opened its closed beta on 22 October, in the middle of its own commercial. The premise was an inversion of the parent site. On Neopets you owned a Neopet, and a Petpet was the small creature your pet owned, an accessory one rung down the ladder. In Petpet Park the accessory was the player. You picked a species, named it, and walked it around a theme park built for exactly that.
There were six starter species with names that existed nowhere else in the franchise: Dipni, Drym, Hifflo, Kassegat, Oukin, Pinixy. Three more came only through paid NC potions. The park held over thirty flash games, a set of jobs and quests, a home you decorated and a garden you planted, and a weekly Friday gathering that functioned as the community's standing appointment. The economy was self-contained and the shops restocked infinitely, which quietly removed the one mechanic that made the Neopets economy feel like a game at all.
Being the target audience for this meant already having a Neopets account, which meant having come through Neopets as a child in the early 2000s. That door was closed to me by about a decade. In October 2008 I was 24 and on ttnet broadband, and the kid internet in Turkey at that point ran through Habbo Otel and Flash game portals rather than anything in the Neopets orbit, so the parent site was a name I knew and never an account I held.

~ a separate account for the same name ~
Petpet Park shared its username namespace with Neopets, so your name was reserved for you. Nothing else carried across. The accounts were fully separate, sharing neither progress nor a single item of inventory. Neopets by 2008 had years of accumulated collections behind those logins, and the spin-off asked every one of those players to walk in with empty pockets.
The infinite shop stock made that worse rather than better. On Neopets, scarcity was the engine. You refreshed a shop waiting for stock and you learned what things were worth by reselling them. Petpet Park let you buy whatever you wanted whenever you wanted it, so the currency had nowhere to go and nothing to mean.
~ the day it died ~
On 9 September 2014, Viacom's Nickelodeon division sold Neopets to JumpStart Games, an educational software company best known for a CD-ROM series aimed at grade schoolers. The closure of Petpet Park was announced as part of the same transaction. Servers went dark on 18 September, nine days after the sale.
What JumpStart wanted was the parent brand and its user base. Flash was also two years into its long public decline by then, and a browser game with no client and no mobile version was a liability on any acquirer's spreadsheet.
~ what got buried with it ~
Nothing playable survived. There was no downloadable client to preserve and no offline mode, so the whole park went when the servers did, and the Lost Media Wiki now tracks it as a fully lost online game. The nine species went with it, since none of them were ever ported back into Neopets proper.
petpetpark.com still answers today. It returns a page with an empty title tag and a parking layout, served by a registrar rather than by anyone who remembers what was there.
