2006 - 2017
dead europe
wrzuta was poland's youtube, a place to throw up a video or an mp3 and hand someone the link, and for a couple of years in the mid-2000s it was one of the busiest sites in the country. it started inside the o2 group in 2006 and later passed to wirtualna polska. the traffic drained out slowly across a decade as youtube and facebook took the room. wirtualna polska turned it off on the last day of august 2017 and pointed the old domain at a radio player.

~ the obit ~

Wrzuta was Polish and it stayed Polish, and that is the whole reason it never reached me. i was online in turkey through the same years it was loud, on ttnet, watching the same global video sites everyone else did. Wrzuta lived one country over, in a language i cannot read, doing locally what youtube did for the rest of us.

so this is the outside view, checked against the record. Wrzuta started in 2006 inside Grupa o2, one of the Polish web companies of that era, as a plain place to upload a clip or a song and pass along the link. in 2006 and 2007 that was a rare thing to have in your own language, and it became one of the busiest sites in Poland almost at once. video or music, whatever people wanted to share, it went through Wrzuta.

The peak did not last. o2 got absorbed into Wirtualna Polska, the big Polish portal, and Wrzuta became one line item inside a much larger company. Meanwhile youtube and facebook were pulling the same uploads onto platforms that did not care what country you sat in. The traffic fell year after year, the slow bleed that never makes news until the very end.

Wirtualna Polska shut it on 31 August 2017 and called it a business decision, which it plainly was. There was no archive. Users were told to download their own files before the lights went out, because nothing would be kept. The domain got repointed at open.fm, a radio player, and the video site a generation of Poles grew up uploading to was simply gone. i only met the name years later, reading through the list of European sites that died while i was watching the global ones.

~ what it was ~

Under the branding Wrzuta was a plain thing, an upload box and a player, the local answer to a question youtube was answering everywhere else. its value was not the technology. it was that the interface and the front page were in Polish, for people who in the mid-2000s still could not count on the rest of the web speaking their language.

~ what really happened ~

There was no scandal and no lawsuit, only arithmetic. A site loses users for long enough and eventually the people who own it stop paying to keep the servers warm. Wrzuta had been fading quietly since around 2010, and 2017 was just the year someone finally signed off on it. The redirect to a radio station was the last small indignity, the domain still worth something, the thing it once held worth nothing to the new owner.
