Softcard

2010 - 2015
dead us
the three biggest us carriers got together in 2010 and built a tap-to-pay nfc wallet inside a sim-based secure element. they called it isis. then isis became a different word in the news in 2014, the wallet got renamed softcard. five months later google bought the patents and shut the app off.

~ the goodbye ~

softcard never reached turkey at meaningful scale. it was a us-carrier-coded product at the merchant layer and at the sim layer both. tap-to-pay in 2013 in ankara meant a contactless bank card on a paywave terminal at migros or a couple of sample integrations on bkm express, not a us carrier wallet sitting in a secure element on the sim. the network rails were not there. honestly i had a samsung galaxy on turkcell in those years and the nfc chip on the back of the phone basically sat unused.

look, the product started life as a joint venture. in those days, at&t mobility, verizon wireless and t-mobile usa rolled up their nfc-payment ambitions into a manhattan llc called jvl ventures in november 2010 and named the wallet isis mobile commerce. discover financial services was the back-end network partner. for some reason, the choice to brand the wallet after an egyptian goddess turned into a problem about three years later when the iraq-syria militant group started getting front-page coverage under the same acronym. in september 2014 the company renamed itself softcard. the app icon and the play store listing changed at the same time.

the wallet sat in a secure element on the sim, which mattered because the carriers controlled the sim. the pitch to the carriers was that this kept payment data inside their lane instead of inside google or apple's lane. the pitch to the user was a tap-to-pay app that worked at any payment terminal supporting visa paywave or mastercard paypass. salt lake city and austin were the launch test markets in late 2012. nationwide rollout came in november 2013. the rename came ten months after that.

~ the chronicle ~

Bornnovember 16 2010, JVL Ventures LLC joint venture launched in manhattan as Isis Mobile Commerce
Peakaround 1.7 million downloads, available on most carrier-locked android handsets in the US by late 2014
Killedmarch 31 2015, app pulled from the play store after Google acquisition
Lifespanaround 4 years from JV launch to shutdown, about 2 years live in nationwide rollout
Made byJVL Ventures LLC, the US carrier joint venture out of New York
Killed byGoogle acquisition of the patents in february 2015, fold into Android Pay later that year

~ what it actually was ~

underneath, softcard was a payment app that delegated the cryptographic work to a smartcard chip on the sim, a model called sim-se. either way, the user opened the app, picked a card, held the phone to the terminal, the secure element handled the transaction. the carriers got a share of the fees from the participating banks. the bet was that controlling the secure element meant controlling the future of mobile payments at the chip layer (or whatever it was called).

apple killed that bet in september 2014 by shipping apple pay with a different model. apple pay used a secure enclave on the phone itself, not on the sim. that decoupled the wallet from the carrier and put the iphone in the loop instead. the merchants got the same nfc terminals either way. softcard was now competing with apple's wallet on android only, against a google wallet that had been around since 2011 and was also free to use.

~ how it actually ended ~

this part you had to be in the us for and i was not. by november 2014 the carrier joint venture was looking for an exit. google announced on february 23 2015 that it had bought softcard's technology and patents. reuters put the deal around 70 million dollars. anyway, the agreement put the softcard wallet on a fixed shutdown timeline and pre-installed google wallet on android handsets from at&t, verizon, t-mobile starting later in 2015. the softcard app stopped working on march 31 2015. any prepaid balance had to be moved off before that date.

google folded the acquired tech into what it launched as android pay at google i/o 2015. the host card emulation model that android pay used was different from the sim-se model softcard had been built on. so the engineering work that softcard had spent five years on lived on for a couple more years as a samsung-pay fork on a couple of korean phones, and not as the main android wallet path.

~ what came after ~

in 2026 the carrier-controlled secure element on the sim is a dead architecture. honestly, every major mobile wallet now runs on host card emulation or on a phone secure enclave. the carriers got a share of nothing. apple pay and google wallet split the smartphone tap-to-pay market between them and the banks settled the interchange directly with the wallet operators. softcard left no real successor product. the patents are inside google now.
