Leap Transit

2013 - 2015
dead us
leap wanted to make the city bus feel like a startup office on wheels. refurbished coaches with leather seats and cold-pressed juice ran between san francisco neighborhoods for six dollars, more than twice the public fare. the problem was it never had the permits to run at all. california regulators ordered it to stop in may 2015, and by july it had filed for bankruptcy and auctioned its buses.

leap was built for a specific person: a san francisco software worker who could afford six dollars each way and found the public bus beneath them. that was not my commute and not my crowd. in ankara you take the belediye bus or a dolmuş, and nobody would think to launch a premium version with juice on board. leap only makes sense in a city where riding transit had quietly become a status question.

leap started in may 2013 as a single chartered bus, a beta test its founders ran between the marina and the financial district. the real version launched in march 2015 with refurbished coaches that had leather seats and sold cold-pressed juice on board. it cost six dollars a ride against roughly two on the city bus. andreessen horowitz and marc benioff were among the backers, with about two and a half million dollars in.

the flaw was that leap had skipped the boring part. it never got the permits a passenger carrier needs in california. on 20 may 2015 the state utilities commission ordered it to stop operating, citing missing insurance and other basic requirements. two months later, on 15 july, leap filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy. the refurbished buses went to auction.

the deeper problem underneath the permits was the math, the same math that took down most of the on-demand era. a bus is expensive to run, and six dollars a head does not cover the driver and the coach, let alone the insurance leap never carried. the luxury framing made it a target on top of that. at the height of san francisco's fights over tech money and displacement, a private juice bus rolling past a crowded public stop was an easy thing to resent.

~ the funny part ~

the detail everyone remembered was the buses themselves. when leap went bankrupt its refurbished coaches were sold off, and the reclaimed-wood interiors that had cost a fortune to install ended up on the block for almost nothing. a company that had raised millions to make the bus feel exclusive left behind a couple of vehicles and a lesson other founders should have already known. running transit is not a software problem you can juice your way out of.
