~ the obituary ~
i missed shyp. by the time it was operating i had a stable turkish courier setup for anything i needed to send: yurtici kargo for small boxes, ptt for anything that had to reach a village. on-demand shipping through a smartphone was a category solving a problem i did not have. shyp was also a coastal-cities-only product, with no ankara node at any point.
the pitch in 2013 was small and clean. you had a thing to send, you tapped a button, a shyp courier came to your door, took the item, boxed it at the shyp warehouse and shipped it out through whichever carrier had the best rate shyp had negotiated. flat fee of five dollars on top of postage. the courier was a w-2 employee with benefits, not an independent contractor. that was the visible ethical differentiator against the wider on-demand economy of the era.
kevin gibbon founded it with joshua scott and jack smith. kleiner perkins led the series b in a $62.1 million total raise. by 2016 shyp had five cities open. by 2017 the consumer product was quietly folded and the company was pivoting to small business customers, with an ebay deal doing most of the volume. gibbon has since said the mistake was keeping the popular-but-unprofitable consumer service running while the small-business side found its feet.

~ the frequency problem ~
shipping is not a daily habit for most people. an uber user takes a ride multiple times a week. a shyp user might have three things to mail in a year. the unit economics of a warehouse network plus a courier fleet only work if you can amortize the marketing budget across high per-user frequency. gibbon later said they had "vastly overestimated the number of individuals who would regularly ship items."
~ the pivot ~
the last-year pivot was to small businesses returning items for their customers. that worked. by early 2018 the new model was operating at a profit inside the san francisco footprint. but the runway to prove it out across the whole business had already been burned on consumer expansion, and the board could not extend it.
~ the announcement ~
on 27 march 2018 kevin gibbon posted a blog update titled "i can't wait for you to see what we do next." the post confirmed the shutdown and thanked the team. shyp appeared briefly the next year with a new management team promising a comeback, but the second run never landed a public product. the brand went dark for good.
