golf video games were not on my shelf. golf as a sport had a small tv following in turkey through the 2000s, but the video game category was a us-first product line and it lived on us-heavy console hardware. i was 30 in july 2015 doing engineering work in ankara, no ps4 at home, no interest in a putting minigame.

what makes rory mcilroy pga tour worth a grave is not the game itself, it is the box. anyway, this was the first ea pga tour title in sixteen years to ship without tiger woods as the namesake, since 1999. the ea-tiger deal had run from 1998 through tiger woods pga tour 14 in 2013, then tiger and ea parted ways after his personal reputation problems and the franchise sat dark for two full calendar years.

rory mcilroy signed on as the new namesake in march 2015 (roughly), the mcilroy team announced it at the augusta pre-tournament window that year. still, mcilroy was the world number one at that point and the pga's most bankable young name, a rebuild-the-franchise-around-him move on ea's side. the game shipped 14 july 2015 on ps4 and xbox one, ea tiburon in orlando as the studio, frostbite 3 as the engine.

launch reviews were mixed. the frostbite rebuild dropped a lot of the tiger-era course library, the game shipped with only eight actual pga tour venues plus a handful of fantasy courses called night club challenge which was themed around a las-vegas-style setting. critics called it thin, players missed the depth of the previous cycle. for what its worth, no sequel ever came, ea did not ship another golf title until pga tour 2023 rebooted the whole line under a new licensing deal.

~ what it was ~

the game shipped with a small stack of modes. career took you through the pga tour schedule against real players, online tournaments were the multiplayer draw. a third mode called night club challenge sat off to the side as an invented-course arcade layer with a las-vegas theme. golf channel commentary was licensed in, tiger's absence in the audio was noticeable given how much of the previous ten titles had been built around him.

the online layer is the thing ea killed in january 2025. anyway, that took the online tournaments and the connected career mode features out of the game along with the online leaderboards. offline stroke play and single-player career against ai still boot on the disc (roughly). for what its worth, the online layer was the mode that drew what real ongoing community the game had after the 2015 launch.

~ how it ended ~

this part ea handled quietly. anyway, the shutdown notice went onto the ea service updates page in late 2024 with a 16 january 2025 kill date, no press post, no farewell. the same rolling ~ten-year online-services window that took the simpsons tapped out and later fifa 23 caught rory mcilroy pga tour first (close enough). it was the first ea title in the 2025 shutdown queue.

the achievement damage was real for hunters. several trophies and achievements were tied to online tournaments and connected career features, all of which went offline that day and cannot be earned since. the game itself was pulled from ps store and xbox store shortly before the server kill, which is the standard ea rolling-shutdown pattern.

~ what got buried with it ~

this part matters for the pga-tour-continuity people, most of the rest of the gaming world does not care. anyway, rory mcilroy pga tour is the last ea pga tour game before the ten-year gap before pga tour 2023. still, on the ea side of the franchise it is the transitional title, the post-tiger reboot that did not spawn a sequel and the last release before the reboot after that.

by 2026 the golf-game category on modern platforms is basically ea sports pga tour 2023 plus 2k's pga tour 2k25 (roughly). rory mcilroy pga tour sat alone in between for nearly a decade as the only golf game on modern hardware. the shutdown killed the last active online layer that connected any of it, the disc still boots but only in the way old sports discs boot, into a career mode that no one plays anymore.
