~ the goodbye ~
ufc never landed in turkey the way it did in the us. mma had a small following in ankara through the late 2000s, a few gyms taught brazilian jiu-jitsu and digiturk carried some of the fights on ppv, but the sport was not on the football-plus-formula-1 tier that dominated turkish sports television. i was 33 in february 2018 doing engineering work, no ps4 at home, no ufc fan base in my friend list.
ufc 3 shipped 2 february 2018 as ea canada's third title in the franchise after ea took the mma license off thq back in 2012 (roughly). conor mcgregor on the cover as the second time he had held that slot, ufc 2 in 2016 had done the same. the game leaned on a new full-body-deformation animation system ea called real player motion, which was the marketing headline through the launch cycle.
launch month it hit sixteenth most-downloaded ps4 game in the us and seventh in europe. anyway, chart position at the top-twenty tier in the uk and top-thirty in australia. for whatever reason, the mma game category had always been ea versus thq versus nothing else, and by 2018 it was ea versus nothing. no other major publisher was competing for the license anymore.
the online layer is what ea kept alive for seven years after launch. that is the longest run of any ea ufc title, ufc 4 shipped 2020 and ufc 5 shipped 2023 but neither has crossed the seven-year mark yet. ufc 3 outlasted its two successors on the online lifespan clock (close enough), which is a weird distinction to hold and also the reason the shutdown got framed as an end-of-support headline in the mma coverage.
~ the chronicle ~
| Born | 2 february 2018 (ea sports, ps4/xbox one) |
|---|---|
| Peak | top-20 UK launch month, 16th most-downloaded ps4 game in the US in february 2018 |
| Killed | 17 february 2025 (online servers off, delisted from ps store and xbox store the same day) |
| Lifespan | 7 years 2 weeks |
| Made by | ea canada (electronic arts) |
| Killed by | ea rolling online-services shutdown, pushed toward ufc 5 as the migration target |
~ what it was ~
ea canada ran the whole ea sports mma stack out of burnaby, the same studio that shipped nhl and fight night before it. the ufc 3 core was a career mode where you built a fighter through amateur promotions into the ufc, plus versus multiplayer with ranked and unranked queues on top. bolted onto that was a ultimate team clone called ea sports ufc 3 ultimate team where you collected fighter cards.
the ultimate team layer was the online mode ea leaned on the hardest. anyway, card packs cost premium currency, the top cards went for real money, the meta rotated with balance patches. it is the same fut model bolted onto a different sport. for what its worth, ea got the model working across every one of its sports franchises by the mid-2010s and ufc was one of the last to receive the treatment properly.
~ the day it died ~
this part ea did announce publicly. anyway, the ufc forums post went up in late 2024 with the 17 february 2025 kill date printed at the top. seven weeks warning window, longer than nfs rivals got. still, the shutdown swept every online mode at once, from ultimate team down to the online challenges list. offline career mode and offline versus survived (roughly).
the delisting happened the same day. ea pulled ufc 3 from both digital storefronts on 17 february, which meant anyone who did not own the disc or already have it in their psn / xbox library could no longer buy the game at all. the migration pitch pointed at ufc 5, which was the third one in the queue and already the target for the new fut-adjacent economy.
~ what got buried with it ~
this part matters more for the achievement hunters than the mma casuals. anyway, fifteen of the game's console achievements required online play or the ultimate team economy. those got locked on the shutdown date and can no longer be earned by anyone starting a new file. still, older gamerscore hunters who had already run the game to 100 percent before february 2025 kept the numbers.
the bigger buried thing is the seven-year fut layer itself. every card the community grinded out, every meta build, every online record went with the server kill. by 2026 the ufc 3 subreddit had turned into a small archive of screenshots from the last week of servers, plus the usual jokes about the ea rolling-shutdown calendar and which mma game was next in the queue.
