~ the last words ~
i did not listen to a single podcast on facebook. i am not sure anyone i know did. the us-only rollout meant this product was not available on my account by default, and even if it had been, opening the facebook app to play a podcast was not a habit that would have made sense against overcast, pocket casts, spotify and every other player that was already installed on my phone. the whole thing existed for a window of about eleven months and vanished before most facebook users outside the us knew it had launched.
the launch was 22 june 2021 on the news feed announcement that meta wrote up on the corporate about.fb.com blog. it was one half of a two-part audio strategy. the other half was live audio rooms, meta's clubhouse clone. podcasts on facebook worked by connecting an existing rss feed to a facebook page. once linked, new episodes appeared inside the page's feed, followers could play them without leaving facebook, and creators got some basic engagement numbers back. no exclusive hosting, no bundled ads. it was distribution more than a platform.
the strategic context was the same audio panic that produced clubhouse fever across the industry. spotify was throwing money at podcast exclusives while twitter had spaces in beta. amazon had bought wondery the year before. meta needed to be in audio, both live and on-demand, and it needed to be there fast enough to matter before the incumbents locked up the creators. facebook podcasts and live audio rooms shipped together in june 2021 for that reason.
~ the record ~
| Born | 22 June 2021 in the US as meta's answer to spotify's podcast push and clubhouse's audio moment |
|---|---|
| Peak | us-only rollout, integration with the audio hub launched october 2021 |
| Killed | 3 June 2022, announced 3 May 2022 |
| Lifespan | eleven months and twelve days |
| Made by | Meta media partnerships team |
| Killed by | the 2022 audio-product cull, tiktok short-video pivot, weak listener adoption inside facebook |
~ the fall ~
listener behavior did not follow. facebook's dwell time was built around video and text posts scrolling past. audio needed people to open the app and keep it open long enough to listen to a thirty-minute episode. the friction was in every step. the podcast catalog inside facebook could not compete with a native app that had subscription state and download management already wired up. the audio hub launched in october 2021 tried to fix discovery by putting live audio rooms and podcasts under one shelf alongside soundbites. the discovery problem was not the actual bottleneck.
the wider context was the tiktok pivot. by early 2022 meta had internally decided that short-form vertical video was the priority against tiktok. every non-video surface got resource-scanned for whether it justified its team headcount. audio did not.
~ the day it died ~
on 3 may 2022 the podcast news arrived. meta told creators that new linking would stop within the week and the in-app player would go dark on 3 june, though existing shows could keep publishing until that same date. soundbites got killed in the same memo. the audio hub was set to close a few weeks later. live audio rooms was folded into facebook live rather than shut down at that point, that shutdown came 2 december 2022 as a separate announcement.
on 3 june 2022 the play buttons stopped working. episodes remained archived on the facebook pages that hosted them but nothing played inside facebook anymore. the rss feeds themselves were unaffected since they had never lived on facebook, they lived on the podcasters' own hosts. facebook was only ever a distribution layer, and when meta pulled the plug the actual podcast files kept running everywhere they had run before.
~ the legacy ~
podcasting itself did not care that facebook stopped playing podcasts. rss stayed as the protocol, apple podcasts, spotify, overcast, pocket casts all kept working. what died was specifically the idea that a social platform's feed was a good place to host and discover podcasts. spotify would try a version of the same idea and pull back a couple years later after billion-dollar exclusive deals produced weak results. twitter's spaces still runs but not as a podcast platform. the facebook podcast experiment reads now like a stress test that confirmed audio does not want to live inside a scroll-first social product.
