~ the eulogy ~
Facebook Notify launched on November 11, 2015 as a free iOS app available only in the United States. The premise was a phone-wide notification subscription system. You picked which of the 70 launch publishers you wanted to hear from, then drilled into categories. CNN breaking news. Vogue runway recaps. Bleacher Report alerts for your team. The Weather Channel for your zip code. Each push was a one-tap link to the publisher's article, no in-app reader, no Facebook social layer.
The app got around 63,000 downloads in seven months. Facebook announced the shutdown on June 2, 2016 and pulled the App Store listing by June 8. The technology, such as it was, got rolled into Messenger's publisher bots and the broader News Feed personalization stack. There was no Android version. There was never an outside-US release.
I missed Notify entirely. I was 31 with a turkish app store account and the app was geofenced to us territories. By late 2015 my notification setup was already crowded with whatsapp and gmail badges; the idea of subscribing to more push from publishers would have felt like volunteering for spam. i learned about the shutdown years later reading retrospectives on facebook's killed-app cluster.
~ the dossier ~
| Born | November 11, 2015, iOS in the US |
|---|---|
| Peak | ~63,000 downloads, 70 publishers signed up |
| Killed | June 8, 2016 |
| Lifespan | 7 months |
| Made by | Facebook (descendant of the Creative Labs team) |
| Killed by | Notification fatigue and Facebook's own pivot to bots and Instant Articles |
~ the pitch ~
Notify came out of the same internal logic that produced Paper a year earlier. Facebook wanted to own the surfaces where news happened on the phone, and the lock screen was the most valuable surface there is. If users let Notify push them, Facebook would learn what they actually cared about beyond what Facebook News Feed could infer. The publisher list at launch was a who's-who of mainstream us media because Facebook handpicked it.
~ why it died ~
People did not want it. 63,000 downloads is a rounding error for a Facebook product. Notification fatigue was already a known problem in 2015, and asking users to opt into more push, from outlets they could already follow on Facebook itself, was a hard sell. The Apple Watch wave Notify was timed to ride never materialized either. By mid-2016 Facebook was moving every news bet into Instant Articles, the in-app reader format that lived inside the main News Feed.
~ the long tail ~
The Notify team mostly survived the kill and moved into Messenger bot infrastructure for the april 2016 F8 announcement. Bots solved the same publisher-delivery problem in a different surface. They also flamed out within two years. Facebook never tried a standalone news app again. The category got handed to Apple News on iOS and Google News on Android, and the lock screen stayed contested through every alert.
