~ the last words ~
resso never operated in turkey. by 2020 i was in ankara on edge ai contracts, mostly using spotify like everyone else. resso was a bytedance music app for india with parallel launches in brazil and indonesia, markets where spotify was either late or thinly licensed, and where bytedance saw a chance to wedge a tiktok-shaped social music product before the local incumbents reset their products.
the app went live on 4 march 2020 with a major-label catalog spanning universal music group and warner music, with sony music joining shortly after. the product differentiator was a comment-on-lyrics social layer that let users react to specific song lines, plus a vertical short-form video feed of users miming or reacting to tracks. that was tiktok-grammar applied to a music app two years before tiktok music would copy it.
india was the home market. one 2021 analytics study put resso second only to spotify on the monthly-streams metric in india, generating 2.8 billion streams a month against spotify's 3.2 billion. by may 2023, sensor tower estimated that over 250 million people had downloaded the app globally across the three launch markets. the indian team was building a domestic licensing dataset that included regional-language catalog and indie artists the global dsps would not touch. the road to a homegrown indian-language music platform looked open.
~ the record ~
| Born | 2020-03-04 (global launch in india with simultaneous brazil and indonesia rollouts) |
|---|---|
| Peak | over 250 million downloads globally by may 2023 per sensor tower, second only to spotify on monthly streams in india in 2021 |
| Killed | 2024-01-31 (final shutdown in india after the meity order) |
| Lifespan | just under four years from launch to india shutdown |
| Made by | ByteDance, the tiktok parent, through its india music team |
| Killed by | the indian ministry of electronics order to google and apple |
~ how it ended ~
the indian ministry of electronics and information technology, meity, had been asking bytedance for a year about how the resso recommendation algorithm processed indian user data. tiktok itself had already been banned in india in june 2020 over similar questions. on 11 january 2024 meity ordered google and apple to delist resso from their indian app stores. bytedance had two choices: answer the data questions and try to stay, or fold the indian operation.
bytedance folded. the official statement said local market conditions made it impossible to continue serving users in india, and that operations would end on 31 january 2024. paid subscribers were refunded prorated. the catalog rights reverted to the labels. the indian-language and indie deals the local team had built up went back into the labels' standard distribution.
~ what got buried with it ~
resso was the last bytedance consumer brand operating at scale in india. tiktok had been gone since 2020. helo, the other bytedance social app the indian government banned, never came back. when resso went offline on 31 january 2024, bytedance's consumer-facing presence in india effectively ended. that is a notable thing for what had been one of the largest mobile app markets on earth.
the product itself migrated to tiktok music outside india. the comment-on-lyrics feature and the vertical feed got rolled into the july 2023 tiktok music launch across brazil and indonesia, with the rollout extending to mexico and singapore that fall. tiktok music ran for about sixteen months before bytedance shut that down too on 28 november 2024. the entire bytedance music play was over within a year of the resso india close.
~ the legacy ~
the resso shutdown is the clearest example of a regulatory-driven kill in the modern streaming era. the product did not lose users. it was not outcompeted by a better app. a government delisting order made it untenable in its home market, and the parent decided the cost of fighting the order was higher than the value of the indian user base. the indian dsp market reorganized around jiosaavn and gaana, with the post-wynk apple music partnership picking up the airtel customer base in the months that followed.
