Wynk Music

2014 - 2024

wynk music was bharti airtel's india-only music streaming app, launched on 1 september 2014 and bundled free for airtel mobile subscribers. it carried hindi film, regional indian language and english catalogues from t-series, saregama, sony music india and the majors. airtel announced shutdown on 27 august 2024, pivoting subscribers to an apple music partnership, and switched the app off by the end of december 2024. employees were absorbed into airtel's telecom division.

~ the obituary ~

wynk was india-only at the carrier layer. you signed in with an airtel mobile number, the streaming was free for prepaid plans above a certain tier, the catalogue was hindi film plus tamil, telugu, punjabi, malayalam and english. a turkish engineer with a turkcell sim was never going to see the inside of it. i registered the name only because it sat next to gaana, jiosaavn and resso in the indian streaming press, and because airtel kept advertising it as a bundled benefit in any india mobile-market piece i read.

the launch date is 1 september 2014. bharti airtel was the largest mobile operator in india at the time, and wynk was its answer to the question of how a telco competes in a streaming market without owning a label. the answer was: bundle the app for free, sign exclusive distribution deals with t-series and saregama and the indian majors, charge a small premium tier for ad-free.

that strategy ran for ten years. by 2024 the app had over 75 million users, with some reports citing more than 100 million across the lifecycle. on 27 august 2024 airtel announced the shutdown and a partnership with apple to bundle apple music for premium subscribers instead. the wynk app was discontinued by the end of december 2024.

~ the climb ~

the rise rode the indian smartphone wave. between 2014 and 2018 india added hundreds of millions of new smartphone users, mostly on airtel, reliance jio, or vodafone idea. each carrier built a streaming bundle: airtel had wynk, jio had jiosaavn, vodafone had vodafone music. wynk was the strongest of the three for most of that window because airtel had the bigger postpaid base and the better catalogue deals.

the indian music streaming market never matched the global tier in average revenue per user. ad supply was thin, premium tiers were priced at one or two dollars a month, piracy was easier than enforcement. wynk's economics ran on cross-subsidy from airtel mobile revenue rather than on the music business itself.

~ the funny part ~

the funny part is that wynk was never going to be sold or spun off. it was a marketing line on an airtel prepaid recharge screen. when the math stopped working, airtel did not look for a buyer, it looked for a partner. that partner turned out to be apple, which gave airtel a premium-tier consumer benefit that did not require running a streaming app of its own.

the announcement framed the shutdown as a music-lives-on transition. premium wynk subscribers got pushed to apple music. employees got absorbed into airtel's telecom side. the catalogue licensing deals expired or migrated.

~ what got buried with it ~

what got buried was an indian-language playlist culture that wynk had spent ten years curating. the regional editorial team at wynk made tamil, telugu and punjabi playlists that ranked alongside the hindi film tier on the home screen. apple music's india editorial is competent but its native cultural depth across the eight or nine major indian languages is not the same. that gap is what jiosaavn and gaana still cover, with progressively smaller staff than wynk had at its peak.

the india-dsp graveyard is real and growing. resso left india in january 2024 after a government order. wynk in late 2024. hungama music in april 2025. the wynk shutdown is the largest of the three by user base, and the cleanest case of a telco walking away from owning a streaming product to bundle a global one.
