~ the eulogy ~
beats music never had a real turkey footprint. the launch was us-only in january '14, the second-market rollout in september went to a small list of anglosphere countries that did not include turkey. the licensing rights for the reznor-curated playlists were locked to those markets. in ankara in '14 i was already on spotify, which had landed in turkey the year before with a turkish-lira subscription and full universal coverage. close enough.
jimmy iovine had been chairman of interscope records and one of the architects of the beats-by-dre headphone brand with dr. dre. in those days. trent reznor was hired in december '12 as chief creative officer, ian rogers came from topspin media to run the company as ceo. the product launched on january 21 '14 at $9.99 a month with a twenty-million song library and mobile clients. the differentiator was the curation engine, called the sentence, that asked you a four-tap mood prompt and built a playlist from it. the press coverage was friendly, the subscriber count was small.
apple announced the acquisition on may 28 '14. either way, the deal was $3 billion in cash and stock, around $2.6 billion cash plus apple stock vesting on a schedule. in fairness, the wall street journal reporting put beats music's standalone value at under $500 million, the rest of the price was the beats-by-dre headphone brand and the iovine-and-dre catalog relationships. apple did not shut beats music down immediately. tim cook publicly committed to keeping the service running and the team in place. for the next year they did.
apple music launched on june 30 '15. anyway, it inherited the beats music curation engine and the editorial staff that had been running it. the mood-driven recommendations that had been beats music's pitch became the for-you tab in apple music. existing beats music subscribers were given a migration path that moved saved playlists into apple music accounts. for five months the two services ran in parallel, with apple visibly building the bridge in one direction. on november 30 '15 the beats music apps stopped logging in. the brand was retired and the streams ended.
the iovine-and-reznor pitch about human curation versus algorithm became apple's official position for the next decade. the beats music brand vanished but the for-you tab in apple music is the same product re-skinned. by '24 spotify had walked toward the same model with its daylist and discover-weekly features. the curation argument that beats music had built its 22-month life around won the larger argument and disappeared as a separate brand at the same time.

~ the sentence ~
the curation pitch lived inside an interface called the sentence. you filled blanks for mood and activity, then for company and genre. the playlist that came back was hand-curated by the beats editorial team out of a library of pre-built playlists keyed to those combinations. the differentiation versus pandora and spotify in '14 was the visible human hand. the press kit phrasing was that algorithms could not understand a saturday evening, that the difference between a workout and a wake-up needed an editor. apple kept the frame and made it the recommended-by-apple-music-editors tab in '15.
~ the apple absorption ~
apple music inherited beats music's editorial staff and the curation tooling. anyway, the migration path moved saved playlists across with the user's apple id. ian rogers stayed at apple as senior director of apple music for about a year, then left for lvmh. trent reznor stayed on as chief creative for a longer arc, still credited inside apple music as of '24. either way, the brand-name beats music vanished from the apple support pages within a year of the november '15 shutdown. the press coverage was light, the migration had been advertised for months and the actual switch-off was treated as a maintenance event.
~ what it became ~
the for-you tab in apple music is the direct descendant of the sentence interface. in fairness. the editorial-playlist set under apple music's browse menu is the descendant of the beats music featured library. iovine left apple in '18 once his lock-up vesting was done. the beats music identity persists only inside acquisition filings and the legal docs migrated to apple. the louder iovine-and-dre arc continued through the beats-by-dre headphone product, which is itself now an apple-owned hardware line (close enough).
