Hungama Music

2013 - 2025

hungama music was an indian music streaming service launched in 2013 under hungama digital media. in mid-2023 it cut its free tier and went subscription-only, mirroring bytedance's resso paid pivot. the user base never scaled to spotify or jiosaavn levels even at peak. on 15 april 2025 the consumer dsp brand was shut down. the third indian music service exit in eighteen months after resso in january 2024 and wynk music in november 2024.

~ the last words ~

hungama music never reached turkey. it was an indian streaming product for indian consumers and the regional-language content libraries that mattered for it did not cross the border. by 2025 i had spotify for non-turkish music. the indian dsp graveyard is being written from outside.

the company launched the streaming service in 2013 under hungama digital media, an indian content firm with a longer prior life in mobile ringtone licensing and bollywood digital rights. the music app sat alongside film and tv content in the parent portfolio. at peak it carried a meaningful share of regional-language listening, with libraries in tamil and telugu plus the bhojpuri and punjabi depth that thinner-catalog competitors did not match.

the indian dsp market was always crowded. spotify entered in 2019, jiosaavn merged the saavn and jio music catalogs the same year. wynk had airtel telco-bundled distribution and gaana had reliance behind it. hungama's slot in the market was the regional-language depth and the parent firm's bollywood rights, which kept it relevant on paper without ever turning it into a leader.

Killed bythe failed paid-only pivot in a price-sensitive market

~ what it was ~

the app was a standard freemium dsp through 2023. an ad-supported free tier with audio quality limits and a paid tier that removed ads and added higher bitrate. the indian price floor was set by jiosaavn and gaana giving the basic tier away as part of a broader telecom bundle, which made the willingness to pay for music-only subscriptions structurally low across the whole market.

in mid-2023 hungama made a bet that the freemium model in india was the wrong shape and that paid-only would force monetization. bytedance's resso ran the same experiment around the same window. both bets failed for the same reason. a price-sensitive market does not respond well to a paywall when free alternatives exist on the device next door.

~ the postmortem ~

the user base did not scale after the paid-only switch and the parent firm decided to wind down the consumer brand. on 11 april 2025 the digital music news reporting flagged the imminent shutdown. on 15 april 2025 the downloaded music and library content stopped being available. the hungama digital media parent rebranded to hungama ott and kept its film and tv business under the same umbrella, dropping music.

this was the third indian dsp to close in eighteen months. resso had been pulled by government order in january 2024 over content moderation issues, and wynk music had been shut by airtel in november 2024 for an apple music partnership. hungama was the third indian-owned name to leave in the same cycle. jiosaavn and gaana are the two domestic dsps still standing as of mid-2026.

~ the funny part ~

the funny part is that indian music streaming consumption did not shrink while these closures happened. the listener numbers kept climbing through 2024 and into 2025. what shrank was the count of native indian platforms making the catalog available. consolidation around two domestic names plus the global incumbents ended up looking like the equilibrium.

the indian dsp story has a lesson the global trade press kept repeating in 2025: the music-streaming category structurally rewards two or three winners per market and there is no profitable middle ground. hungama lived in that middle ground for twelve years and the math finally ran out.
