Amazon Halo

~ the obituary ~
amazon halo was the kind of thing that shipped in the us on prime day and never quite made it out. i was on a garmin at the time in ankara for the uav-work bike commutes. the halo band did not have a us-only sim requirement or anything hard-locked. it just needed the halo app, which was us-only for most of its life, and a prime us billing address. it was easier to buy a fitbit.
the launch on 27 august 2020 was invite-only. amazon shipped the band in early access to us customers first, then opened it in early 2021. the price was seventy dollars for the band plus $3.99 a month for the halo subscription that unlocked the tone-of-voice reports and the 3d body scan. nine months in the tech press was already writing about how strange the whole proposition was. amazon quietly launched the halo view in late '21 with a screen, then the halo rise bedside sleep tracker in september '22.
on 26 april 2023 amazon told employees the whole halo line was over. the customer-facing wind-down ran three months. band devices stopped syncing on 1 august 2023. the app was pulled from the play store and app store the same week. amazon refunded any purchase from the previous twelve months automatically, along with any prepaid subscription. by any reasonable read, it was the cleanest post-mortem cost-cut in the smart-hardware graveyard for that year.

~ the tone thing ~
the feature that got the press coverage was tone analysis. the band had two microphones. you enrolled by reading a script into the app for a minute or two. once trained, the band would sample your voice throughout the day and generate a chart of how you sounded. words like "hopeful," "affectionate," "irritated," "dismissive" would appear on a timeline against the hours of the day.
this was reviewed pretty widely as creepy. the washington post ran a piece where a reporter wore the band for a week and got flagged as "opinionated" during a phone call with her editor. the response from amazon was that the audio was analyzed on-device and deleted after processing. that was likely technically true. it did not change how the feature felt in daily use. the 3d body scan feature drew similar concern for a different reason. you took four photos in tight clothes and the app estimated your body fat percentage. the photos went to amazon's servers first, got processed, then deleted.
~ the slide ~
by 2022 the fitness-band segment already had apple watch, fitbit under google, garmin, oura, whoop. all five had years of head-start on amazon. amazon was not fifth. amazon was maybe eighth in a segment that had already sorted its winners by 2018. the halo view added a screen but did not add a compelling reason to choose it over a comparable fitbit. the halo rise, the bedside sleep-monitoring puck, was probably the most interesting product amazon shipped in the line, and it launched only ten months before the whole brand went dark.
the subscription model was the other problem. everything useful about halo required the $3.99 a month. take that away and the band was a step counter with no display. compare to fitbit, which had a subscription tier by then but did not gate the basics behind it. amazon was asking new customers to trust a new health platform and pay for a new subscription for an app that did not exist in most of the world outside the us.
~ what got buried with it ~
amazon halo was the second consumer-hardware line jassy cut after taking over from bezos in 2021. the first had been amazon glow, a video-calling kids' device that died the same year. halo was more consequential because it had been part of amazon's health push, which included amazon care and the one medical deal that closed in early '23. the health strategy did not go away. the hardware side of it did.
the halo brand also took the tone-analysis idea into the grave with it. no major consumer-hardware company has shipped a mainstream wrist device that scores your emotional voice tone since. maybe someone will try again. by 2026 the wearable segment is deeper into passive health metrics like glucose and hrv than into behavioral surveillance. amazon halo was the version of this decade's wearable market that read your feelings and told you about them.
