~ the obituary ~
by 2019 my podcast rotation was already fully set on apple podcasts on the iphone and pocket casts on the android side. i did not go looking for a fifth podcast app. repod's pitch was a social layer on top of episode discovery, which was not the discovery problem i had. so this is a distance-obit for a small us-market indie app.
the app came from emmett harper and travis osterhaus, and shipped on ios around november 2019. that is when the joshua dudley forbes writeup landed, describing the shape as "reddit for podcast episodes". the feed was scrollable, users upvoted or downvoted individual episodes rather than shows, and comments sat under each episode instead of under each podcast. the app leaned hard into the observation that most podcast recommendations move episode by episode in conversations, not show by show.
the scissors-button feature was the piece that got press coverage. it let a listener select a segment of an episode and share the clip directly, before public clip-sharing was a first-party feature in apple podcasts or spotify. by 2024 both incumbents had shipped something similar. repod was still a small ios-only indie app running on what looked like founder-time and small-amounts of investor money. sometime that year the servers stopped responding, no farewell blog post, no notice on the app store page. the transistor.fm podcast-app-graveyard writeup picked it up under the "gone offline sometime in 2024" line.
~ the case file ~
| Born | around November 2019 (iOS launch, Forbes coverage) |
|---|---|
| Founders | Emmett Harper and Travis Osterhaus |
| Big idea | episode-first podcast discovery with upvotes plus comments |
| Signature feature | scissors button for clipping and sharing episode segments |
| Platform | iOS only for most of its run |
| Killed | quietly during 2024, no announcement |
| Lifespan | about 5 years |
| Killed by | small team, no path past the incumbent podcast apps |
~ what it actually did ~
the core of the app was the episode feed. an ios user opened repod and saw a scrollable list of individual episodes recommended by the people they followed. an upvote pushed the episode up the feed for other users, a downvote pushed it down. comments threaded under each episode. the podcast catalog itself pulled from the standard public rss layer, so any podcast that was findable on apple podcasts was findable on repod.
under that, the follow graph. users followed other users to see what episodes they were listening to and endorsing. this is what the founders called the reddit-shape. it worked for the small community that showed up early and had trouble scaling to a wider audience, because the reddit-shape only works at a scale where anonymous strangers' upvotes are still informative. below that scale, only friends' recommendations carry any information, and you already had imessage for that.
~ the funny part ~
by 2024 apple and spotify had both shipped episode-clip sharing as a first-party feature. spotify's clip-share went out in late 2022. apple podcasts followed with a lightweight version. the specific feature that got repod its early press coverage had been absorbed into the platforms it was supposed to sit on top of. that is a common shape for a small indie app inside a category dominated by two default apps, and repod was not unusual in landing there.
~ what carried over ~
this part i was not around for. repod belongs to the second wave of podcast-app deaths that also took [[google-podcasts]] out in april 2024 and left [[radiopublic]] finished by march 2024. [[stitcher]] had gone the year before (august 2023, sxm shutdown). [[anchor-fm]] survived in shape but as a spotify feature rather than a discrete app. the small-indie tier of podcast clients thinned out in a single window between 2023 and 2024.
the piece worth remembering is that podcast discovery never really got solved as a category. every incumbent tried a version of subscribe-based discovery (apple's shape), plus curated-topic recommendation (spotify's shape on top of google's feed-based version). repod tried the social-graph version and could not scale it. by 2026 the discovery problem is still mostly solved through word of mouth and social feeds outside the podcast apps themselves.
