~ the obituary ~
the american public radio ecosystem sat outside my podcast intake. NPR was a name to me, not a listen. i am a computer engineer in ankara who consumed english-language podcasts as a small side channel, mostly technical shows on a stock ios player or overcast. radiopublic was built for a specifically american audience of npr-adjacent listeners and the shape of it never really landed in the turkish market.
prx, the cambridge-massachusetts public-radio distributor behind this american life and the moth radio hour, announced on 19 may 2016 that it was forming radiopublic as a separate public benefit corporation. jake shapiro (who had been prx's founding ceo) took over as radiopublic ceo, and kerri hoffman became the new prx ceo.
the ios and android apps came out on 21 november 2016 (about six months after the corporate announcement). the pitch was a podcast app that felt closer to a radio station, with editorial curation from a specific set of public-radio-adjacent producers built in as a first-class layer next to the raw rss subscription. really though. it never became the biggest player in the space but it held a specific loyal audience.

~ the climb ~
radiopublic's differentiator was a listener-support layer. producers could enroll their shows and get a per-verified-listen payment from radiopublic's advertising revenue share. the model was called paid listens. it was one of the first attempts to build direct compensation into a podcast app without asking listeners to subscribe individually or use a separate paywall service.
the investor list was public-radio-adjacent too. project11 and the new york times sat at the top of the round with knight foundation enterprise fund and mcclatchy on the media side. homebrew and up2398 came in on the venture side and american public media closed the list. that spread of backers gave the company its early credibility inside the public-media world but did not translate into consumer market share against overcast and pocket casts on the enthusiast side or the spotify/apple mainstream on the other.
~ the acast chapter ~
acast, the swedish podcast host, acquired radiopublic in february 2021. the strategic rationale was acast wanting a us-side listener product to pair with its already-strong hosting business. jake shapiro stayed on as chief community officer at acast for a while. the radiopublic app kept operating with an acast-managed roadmap for three more years.
during the acast window the app got smaller updates but not much investment. the podcast-app category had already contracted (google podcasts was heading for its own 2024 death by that point). in july 2022 acast paid twenty-seven million dollars for podchaser, a separate podcast-database platform, and that acquisition set up the eventual radiopublic decision.
~ the day it died ~
acast announced the radiopublic shutdown in february 2024. the app closed permanently on 31 march 2024. the domain redirects to podchaser now, which is the surviving product inside acast's app portfolio. that is the shape of the acast consolidation move: keep the database, drop the standalone app.
~ what carried over ~
radiopublic left one useful piece behind. the paid-listens model became a reference for later attempts at direct listener compensation inside podcast apps, and acast's own advertising products borrowed some of the mechanics into its hosting layer. the specific radiopublic implementation is gone but the idea lives on in adjacent products.
[[google-podcasts]] closed a few months later, [[stitcher]] the year before. the whole standalone-podcast-app layer thinned out sharply between 2022 and 2024. radiopublic was one of the middle-tier deaths in that thinning, smaller than google and stitcher but with a longer tail of loyalty from the specific audience it served.
