~ the obituary ~
i read about artifact the week it launched. instagram's two founders coming back to build a news reader was the kind of story that travels past the product itself, and it reached me in ankara as tech news rather than as an app i installed. that turned out to be the normal way people met artifact. more of us heard about it than ever opened it.
the pitch was a feed that learned what you wanted to read and served articles from across the web, ranked by a recommender model instead of by who you followed. the press liked the 'tiktok for text' line because it was accurate. systrom and krieger had built the instagram feed, so a news feed tuned the same way was a believable bet. for a few months in 2023 it looked like it might carve out a spot next to the dying twitter.
it did not. the audience stayed small and the founders were honest about why. in january 2024 systrom wrote that the market opportunity was not big enough to justify the investment, and they wound it down. the reading features hung on into february, then went dark. yahoo bought the underlying technology in april 2024 and folded it into its own news app.

~ what it was betting on ~
the bet was that news needed the same treatment photos got in 2010: an algorithm good enough that you stopped choosing and just scrolled. that works when the supply is endless and cheap to make. news is neither. good articles are expensive and slow, and the ones worth reading do not refresh every thirty seconds the way a photo feed does. the model kept working. the material underneath it did not have the same bottomless quality.
~ the long tail ~
the honest shutdown was the unusual part. most founders drag a fading app along for years or sell it into some acqui-hire that quietly kills it. systrom and krieger looked at the numbers, said the category was not worth it, and stopped. yahoo got the recommender code and a name it could reuse. the app itself was gone inside a year of its full launch, which is fast even by the standards of things that end up here.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.
paid once through stripe. payments are handled by OÜ Lakeview, the small company that keeps rip.so running. the money pays for the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
