~ the obituary ~
the shutdown notice went out on 7 february 2022 and russia invaded ukraine seventeen days later. the studio was in kyiv. the honest reading is that the two are not causally connected, because the decision was already public before the war started, and it is still the thing you cannot stop looking at.
survarium existed because of an earlier collapse. on 9 december 2011 sergiy grygorovych shut down gsc game world, the ukrainian studio behind s.t.a.l.k.e.r., and stalker 2 died with the company. oleg yavorsky, who had run gsc's public relations, went looking for investors with several colleagues from the canceled project. nobody in ukraine or russia had the budget for a game at stalker's scale, so the team scaled the ambition down to a free-to-play multiplayer shooter for pc. vostok ventures agreed within two weeks and vostok games was founded in march 2012.
the world they built was recognizable. an ecological disaster in 2020 wipes out roughly ninety percent of humanity, and the agent of it is a forest that grows fast and destroys anything threatening its spread, which in practice means arms factories and military installations, along with the laboratories trying to stop it. anomalies and artifacts carried over from the roadside picnic lineage. it was stalker without the license, made by the people who would have made stalker.
i have no hours in this one. the anchor i do have is thinner and older: s.t.a.l.k.e.r. shadow of chernobyl in 2007 was the game people talked about running badly, on hardware that could not quite manage it, which described most machines i saw in turkey that year. survarium came out of the same building and the same people and never got near that kind of attention. free did not help it.

~ seven years in early access ~
the timeline is the story. alpha testing opened on 13 may 2013 for russian and ukrainian speaking territories and went international a few weeks later. closed beta for the pvp mode started on 20 december 2013, with the studio openly admitting most of the planned content was not in it yet. open beta arrived on 5 january 2015 and steam early access on 2 april 2015. that is where it stayed until it died.
three modes had been promised in the developer diaries. only the player versus player team mode was ever finished. the other two, the ones that would have carried the survival and exploration side of the stalker inheritance, never shipped in seven years. what players got instead was a competitive shooter inside a setting designed for something slower, which is a mismatch you cannot patch out.
~ the day it died ~
vostok announced the closure on 7 february 2022. pc gamer and rock paper shotgun both covered it in late may, once the date was close. the servers were switched off at 11:59 pm kyiv time on 31 may 2022, which is a strangely precise way to end a game that had spent seven years refusing to have a launch date.
in march 2022, between the announcement and the shutdown, vostok said publicly that it was taking a break from its work because of the invasion, with part of the team relocating out of kyiv to elsewhere in ukraine. the studio never claimed the war caused the closure, and the dates say it did not. the war did decide what the last three months of the game looked like.
~ what got buried with it ~
vostok games renamed itself vg entertainment in 2023. before survarium ended it had shipped fear the wolves in 2019, a battle royale in the same eastern european post-disaster register, which also went nowhere. the studio is still in kyiv.
the part that closes the loop is on the other side. gsc game world, the company whose 2011 collapse created vostok in the first place, came back, and s.t.a.l.k.e.r. 2 shipped in november 2024, thirteen years after it was canceled. the sequel that killed the studio eventually existed. the game built out of its wreckage did not live long enough to see it.
