QQ Pet

2005 - 2018

qq pet lived in the corner of the qq instant messenger. you fed it, played with it, sent it to school, watched it grow. it was tencent's tamagotchi inside a chat window, and for the chinese millennial generation it was a permanent fixture of the desktop. by 2018 the desktop was no longer the center of chinese internet life, and tencent shut the penguins down.

~ the obituary ~

QQ pet was the kind of thing a chinese middle schooler kept on the desktop while doing homework. I was not in that demographic. By the time qq pet peaked in 2006 i was already past the age where a digital penguin in the corner of a chat window would have meant anything to me, and even if i had been the right age, qq was not the messenger anyone in turkey was using. The pet lived its life on the chinese desktop and i only learned about it later from the obituary coverage.

It launched in september 2005, bundled into the qq instant messenger. The mascot was a cartoon penguin in the qq house style. The mechanics were borrowed from tamagotchi and neopets. You fed your penguin when it was hungry, played with it when it was bored, bathed it when it was dirty, sent it to school so it could earn experience, and watched it level up. If you neglected it for too long it would get sick and eventually die, although tencent later added paid revival items.

By 2006, less than a year after launch, qq pet had over a million simultaneous users. Tencent's own announcement described it as the largest virtual pet community in the world. For most of the chinese millennial generation this penguin was just there, in the corner, for years. People named them. People wrote diaries about them on chinese forums. People paid for in-game accessories.

~ how it landed ~

The reason qq pet worked at the scale it did was that qq itself was already on every chinese desktop. You did not download qq pet as a separate program. It came with the messenger. If you were a chinese teenager in the mid 2000s, you had qq open all day to chat with classmates, and the pet was always one click away in the qq sidebar.

Tencent gradually layered a virtual economy on top. There were paid clothes for the penguin. Paid food. Paid revival potions if your penguin died. The casual-payment habits that later became wechat pay started here, with chinese kids spending small amounts of allowance on penguin accessories.

~ the funny part ~

Tencent killed qq pet because chinese internet life moved to phones. The desktop messenger that hosted the pet was no longer where people lived. Weibo, wechat, mobile games on android and iphone were where the same generation now spent its attention. The pet that needed feeding could not compete with notifications from a dozen mobile apps.

The shutdown announcement landed in mid september 2018. Tencent said it would clear all user data by the end of the month. The chinese internet had a small collective moment of grief about it. South china morning post and sixth tone both ran obituaries. People posted screenshots of their old penguins. Some had been alive in the game for over a decade.

~ what carried over ~

What qq pet left behind was a generation of chinese internet users who grew up paying small amounts of real money for fake things they cared about. That muscle then carried into wechat stickers, into mobile game lootboxes, into the live-streaming gift economy. The penguin was not just a tamagotchi clone. It was the on-ramp.

The desktop qq client kept running after qq pet died, and still runs in 2026 with hundreds of millions of registered users. But the corner of the window where the pet used to live has been quiet for years now.
