Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers

~ the eulogy ~
Nintendo announced Game Vouchers on 15 May 2019, tucked into a Super Mario Maker 2 Direct. The deal was plain arithmetic. You paid $99.99 and received two vouchers, and each one could be exchanged for a digital copy of a game from an approved list, nearly all of which sold for $59.99. Two games bought the ordinary way came to $119.98, so the saving was twenty dollars and the catch was committing before you knew what you wanted.
You also had to be paying for Nintendo Switch Online. That requirement made it a retention instrument rather than a sale. The list was mostly Nintendo's own output and it ran deep across the years, from Super Mario Odyssey early on to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom later. Vouchers expired twelve months after purchase, so the commitment came with a clock, and people spent them on preorders for games that did not exist yet.
It was announced as a limited offer, open only until 31 July 2019. Nintendo then kept it on sale for six and a half more years. The end came at 11:59 PM Pacific on 30 January 2026, after which the vouchers could no longer be bought. No reason was given, and by then the Switch 2 had been out for most of a year.

~ the only official region without a store ~
I could not have bought these, for a reason Turkish players know by heart: Turkey is an official Nintendo region with no eShop. The console is sold here through official channels and the digital storefront simply does not exist, so the way you buy a game is to set your Nintendo account to another country and pay with a card that country will accept. Game Vouchers were sold through the eShop to Switch Online subscribers, and both of those route through the account region. A scheme that saves twenty dollars on two games is academic when getting to the shop is the hard part.
~ the redemption window ~
The program is dead without being finished. Nintendo's support page is careful about the distinction: vouchers bought on or before 30 January 2026 "will work exactly as they currently do", unused ones expire twelve months after the date of purchase, and anybody holding an active paid Switch Online membership stays eligible to redeem a valid one. Somebody who bought a pair on the last available day has until 30 January 2027 to spend them.
So the closing date is a sales cutoff with a year of settlement behind it. One consequence sits oddly. Redemption needs a live Switch Online membership, which means the final year of the scheme is also a year of subscription renewals being kept up for no purpose other than collecting something already paid for.
