~ the goodbye ~
toontown online launched on 2 june 2003. it was disney's first big mmo, built by disney's virtual reality studio with help from jesse schell's schell games. you signed up, picked a cartoon animal species (dog, cat, mouse, rabbit, horse, duck, pig, monkey, bear), customized colors, and dropped into a bright cartoon world divided into neighborhoods like toontown central, donald's dock, daisy's gardens, the brrrgh. the core gameplay loop was fighting off invading corporate robots called cogs by throwing pies and squirting seltzer at them.
it was subscription-based. ten dollars a month after a free trial. that put it in a different shape from runescape or club penguin. parents who would pay a monthly fee for a kids mmo were a smaller market than the free-to-play crowd. peak active subscriber numbers were never huge by mmo standards but the game had a deeply attached community across a full decade of operation.
disney announced in august 2013 that it was shutting down toontown online together with pirates of the caribbean online and pixie hollow. all three went dark on 19 september 2013. fans called it the disney online massacre. it was disney quietly exiting the desktop kids-mmo category at once. the official reason given was the unsustainable subscription business and the missing mobile path forward.
i never played toontown. by 2003 i was on ultima online private servers and counter-strike at internet cafes in turkey. toontown was disney-coded, US suburban, and clearly aimed at a younger audience i had aged out of by the time it launched. i learned about the september 2013 shutdown years later when toontown rewritten started showing up on retro-gaming youtube channels.

~ what it was ~
the world was a network of districts connected by tunnels. each district was a separate server. you spawned in toontown central with a starter wardrobe and a basic gag-throwing arsenal. the gags came in seven tracks: throw, squirt, lure, sound, drop, trap, zap. you leveled up gags by using them, and combat was turn-based, four toons against up to four cogs at once.
the cogs were the genius of the game. they were not goblins or dragons. they were business robots in suits with names like flunky, pencil pusher, yesman, and big cheese. they had four corporate divisions: bossbot, lawbot, cashbot, sellbot. each division had a headquarters and a final boss called the chief executive officer, the chief justice, the chief financial officer, and the senior vice president. the lore framed corporate america as the literal villain. for a kids game, the satire was sharper than it had any right to be.
~ the disney online massacre ~
on 20 august 2013 disney announced that toontown online, pirates of the caribbean online, pixie hollow, and the world of cars online would all shut down on 19 september 2013. one month of notice. four games. fans called it the disney online massacre because it was disney exiting four separate online communities on the same day.
the official reason was that disney was shifting focus to mobile and to club penguin (which would itself be killed three and a half years later). toontown specifically had the subscription business model issue. ten dollars a month from a kids mmo audience in 2013 was not viable when minecraft was eight bucks once and roblox was free. the math did not work.
~ toontown rewritten ~
within days of the shutdown a small group of fans started reverse-engineering the protocol. toontown rewritten launched in a closed alpha in late 2013 and went open beta in 2014. it ran the original game assets on a fan-built server stack, free of charge. as of 2024 it had been operating for over ten years, longer than the original.
the rewritten team is volunteer staff. they patch bugs and run events. they finished the bossbot headquarters that disney never released. the project's lead, joey ziolkowski, eventually got hired by jesse schell at schell games. the original developer studio that built toontown ended up employing the kid who kept it alive after disney killed it. that is one of the cleaner endings any dead mmo has gotten.
~ what remains ~
the proof that fan preservation works. toontown rewritten has now outlived the original game. the community is still active in 2026. the cogs are still fought. the gameplay is intact. it is one of the most successful private-server preservations of any closed mmo, sitting beside runescape classic emulators and the various ultima online shards.
the corporate-villain lore. for a kids game, toontown's premise of cartoon characters fighting off business-suit robots that wanted to drain color from the world was unusually pointed. nothing in the current kids gaming market has that flavor. roblox does not have a thesis. fortnite does not have a thesis. toontown had a thesis and the thesis was that the suits were the bad guys.
