Poparazzi

2021 - 2023
dead us
alex and austen ma spent three years iterating ttyl inc into one final app called poparazzi, where you could not post a photo of yourself, only friends could tag you. it hit number one free in the us app store within days of the 24 may 2021 launch and pulled benchmark in for a fifteen-million-dollar series a. by early 2023 the monthly actives had fallen from four million to about two thousand. the app shut down on 30 june 2023.

~ the eulogy ~

i missed poparazzi. wrong age, wrong app store region for the loop to land. it launched on 24 may 2021 as an ios-only photo app for the us app store, was downloaded by college-age americans for about three weeks, then quietly emptied out. the whole arc happened in the part of the iphone-only us-only social app calendar i had stopped reading by my late thirties. by the time i looked it up in 2026 the company had already returned the unused capital to investors and the founders had moved on to a second app that the app store also pulled.

alex ma and his brother austen ma had been running a company called ttyl inc since around 2018, going through a long series of pivots and small products that never broke out. poparazzi was the version that did. the launch on 24 may 2021 was preceded by a twitter teaser campaign with a deliberate amount of mystery, and within days the app was at number one on the us app store free chart, beating tiktok and youtube. the press cycle was loud for about a week.

the mechanic was the entire product. you could not post a photo of yourself, you could not upload from your camera roll. you could only take live photos of your friends and post them to their profiles, and your friends could tag the photos with your handle. the pitch was "instagram's photo tagging spun out as its own app, but with the self-posting removed." benchmark partner sarah tavel led a fifteen-million-dollar series a around the launch peak, beating andreessen horowitz to the deal at a valuation around one hundred thirty-five million dollars. floodgate and weekend fund had been in earlier.

~ the origin ~

the first three weeks were the whole story. poparazzi opened with peak monthly actives around four million, briefly held the top of the free chart, and pulled six point two million lifetime installs over its full life. by mid-2021 it had already made tech press lists as the year's hottest social app. the founder narrative was strong: two brothers, three years of pivots before the hit. the press wave was the kind that usually triggers a follow-on at a much higher valuation.

the design did genuinely cut against instagram. by 2021 instagram had been collapsing under self-posted vacation selfies for years, and the idea that your profile was made of photos other people took of you felt like a corrective. for whatever reason, the corrective did not hold. the loop required your whole friend group to install the app and post for you on a sustained schedule. without sustained group adoption your profile went empty within a month and stayed empty.

~ the unraveling ~

by the autumn of 2021 the monthly actives chart was already falling. by early 2023 it was at about two thousand monthly users, down from the four million peak. that is a four-thousand-to-one collapse, which puts it firmly in the brief-novelty-social-app shape that yo and color had already mapped before it. the app could not make money on two thousand maus and could not justify holding the remaining capital, so the founders did the unusual thing and returned the unused series a back to benchmark and the other investors.

alex ma wrote a short medium post on 1 may 2023 announcing the shutdown for 30 june. it was gracious, not diagnostic. he thanked the users and benchmark, he said the team would stay together to build something next. that something turned out to be a second app called made with friends, which itself was later pulled from the app store. the ttyl team did not put out a third.

~ the long tail ~

the tag-only photo idea did not die with poparazzi. instagram itself rolled out a "tagged photos" tab as a profile feature, and a small wave of solo-developer poparazzi-shaped iphone apps appeared in 2024 and 2025 with names like locket and noplace. none of them hit number one on the chart and none of them pulled a benchmark series a. the year-2021 conditions that gave poparazzi its launch wave, post-pandemic college reopenings plus instagram fatigue stretched into a public press appetite for new social formats, did not repeat.

the cleanest part of the poparazzi story is the ending. the brothers gave the money back. that is rare for a venture-backed company that hit number one on the app store. for what its worth, sarah tavel publicly praised the return-the-money move and signaled she would back the team again. the brand was retired on 30 june 2023 and never reused.
