pex was the philippine web's town square from 1999 to roughly the early 2010s, when facebook and twitter took the conversations elsewhere. michael nolledo started it on 12 july 1999 to debate local issues. jude turcuato, one of the cofounders, was the uaap play-by-play commentator known as kaboom, who would read pex thread titles during televised college basketball games and pull the country onto the forum. by 2012 it had over 500,000 members and 63 million posts. it announced closure on 4 april 2023 and switched off on 15 april 2023.

pex sat in the part of internet history i can read about but cannot personally remember. it was a philippine vbulletin forum on a filipino-english code switch, with a userbase that talked about uaap basketball, showbiz, and the manila political week. ankara in 1999 was not in that orbit, and i never had a reason to make an account.

the founders are easy to name from the records. michael nolledo, a doctor who posted as batanguliran, started the forum on 12 july 1999. his brother nix nolledo handled some of the early ops. brother-in-law marco lucena was on design until michael palacios took over. and the nephew, jude turcuato, was the part that mattered to the wider country: he commentated uaap college basketball games on tv under the handle kaboom, and would read pex thread titles on air. that mention loop pulled the philippine internet onto the forum during the y2k years when local penetration was around two percent.

by 2012 the metrics were 508,518 members and 63.8 million posts across half a million threads. the showbiz section was where the metro manila tabloids picked up rumors. the politics section ran longer threads than most newspapers ran columns. the closure post on 4 april 2023 confirmed the shutdown for 15 april. the staff said salamat sa lahat, thanks for everything, and pulled the database.

~ how it landed ~

pex was a vbulletin forum running on a stack any forum admin from that decade would recognize. it kept the dark blue header bar and the threaded post layout right up to the final week. the appeal was not the software, the appeal was the crowd: filipino-internet's earliest dense conversation, in a country where most users in 2000 were still on internet cafe dial-up and where the kaboom mention loop was the marketing channel that turned a niche bulletin board into a national one.

the moderation culture skewed permissive. politics threads ran hot. the celebrity sections were where the first leaks of any showbiz story landed before the broadsheets. for a stretch in the mid-2000s pex was the place a manila tabloid editor would go to find the next day's lead.

~ the long tail ~

the slow decline began around 2009 with the philippine facebook wave. by 2012 the showbiz crowd had migrated to twitter, where the rumor cycle was faster. the politics crowd held on through the 2016 election and the early duterte years, then thinned out across the late 2010s. pex still drew an older base of users who preferred threaded long-form to algorithmic feeds, but the new posts kept getting older on average.

the staff kept it online for years past the point where it was a profit center. the closure note framed it as a sentimental decision finally bowing to economics: the hosting bill outpaced what a fading forum could carry.

~ the day it died ~

the 15 april 2023 shutdown drew rappler, gma, cnn philippines, inquirer and philstar coverage. former users wrote farewell posts about specific threads they had followed for fifteen years. the kaboom thread reads were the detail that came up in every memorial.

nothing replaced pex at the level pex held. the conversations split between facebook groups, reddit's r/philippines, twitter and tiktok. a forum that pulled a country onto threaded vbulletin software is the kind of artifact that only one generation gets to build.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
