Yo

2014 - 2016
dead us
yo was a one-button iphone app that sent the word "yo" to a friend as a push notification. there were no other features. it raised one and a half million dollars at a ten million dollar valuation in june 2014 and hit number four on the us app store. by 2016 it had drifted into skeleton-crew maintenance.

~ the eulogy ~

yo's peak years are 2014, which was the year i turned thirty, was deep in computer-vision work, and read tech blogs in the morning the way other people read newspapers. yo crossed my feed in the morning email, never my phone. i was on android, in turkey, building things that were the opposite of yo in every dimension. yo was a single push-notification with one payload word, and that word was always the same word.

or arbel built it in eight hours in tel aviv at the request of moshe hogeg, ceo of mobli, who wanted "a single-button app to send a notification to his assistant or wife." it was launched april 1 2014 as a joke. by june, between the silicon valley hype circuit and a viral techcrunch piece, the company had raised one and a half million dollars on top of an initial million and was being valued between five and ten million. three million people downloaded it. for about ninety days yo was treated by serious people as an actual signal of where social was headed.

then yo was treated by the same serious people as evidence that everyone had lost their minds. both readings were correct.

~ the funny part ~

the joke was supposed to be the joke. yo was conceived as an april fools' release that overshot. by the time funding closed in june, the team had to pretend in public that yo was actually a "context-based notification protocol," and that there were enterprise B2B applications. some of those applications even shipped briefly: world cup goal alerts in 2014 used yo as a delivery layer. but the product was the joke, and a joke does not retain users past the second time they hear it.

~ what it became ~

by 2016 the company had wound down to a maintenance-only state in everything but name. arbel said as much publicly. in 2018 he opened a patreon to crowdfund the server bill, which is approximately the saddest possible end-state for a venture-funded social app. the domain still resolves in 2026 if you're curious. the app is no longer in the iOS or play store under the original publisher.

the lasting trace is not the app itself but the moment it described. yo was the precise pinprick where 2014 silicon valley funding logic met its own absurdity in public, and the funding side blinked first. nothing was learned. eighteen months later snapchat was a fifteen billion dollar company whose entire pitch was disappearing single images.

~ leave a wreath ~

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
