tbh

2017 - 2018
dead us
tbh was an iphone-only compliments app that asked you to pick which of four schoolmates was kindest, smartest, prettiest. it shipped in georgia in august 2017, hit number one in the us app store within weeks, and got bought by facebook in october 2017 for an estimated 100 million dollars. nine months later facebook killed it citing low usage. the founder later relaunched the same loop as gas, sold gas to discord, and the compliment-poll pattern just keeps getting reincarnated.

~ the obituary ~

tbh was the kind of app american high school sophomores used between class periods. i was not in that demographic. by 2017 i was 33 and working in computer engineering. the only "anonymous compliments" i was getting that year were code review comments left without git blame.

the app's loop was small and well-tuned. it would surface four people from your contacts and ask "who has the best smile" or "who would survive a zombie apocalypse." you tapped one. they got an anonymous gem in their inbox saying a girl in your year picked them. that was it. no chat, no profiles. just compliments, because the founders had built earlier teen apps and learned that anonymous plus open-ended turned into bullying within hours.

it shipped in georgia first as a calibration market. it went viral nationally in september and hit the top of the us app store in october. facebook bought the company that same month. some reporting says 100 million dollars, some says lower. the diligence had taken weeks because high-school virality apps look like crashes the second the testing windows open at noon.

~ how it landed ~

the founders of midnight labs had failed at this exact category before. nikita bier had built politiscope and weave before this one, and each prior product had taught him something about how teen polling rituals burn out. the version that worked was the most stripped-down. four contacts pulled from your address book and one question to tap on.

teachers complained. parents in the sunbelt complained. but the actual product was probably the kindest thing on the iphone in fall 2017. it was the inversion of yik yak.

~ the actual end ~

facebook announced the kill on july 2, 2018, in the same blog post that retired hello and moves. those were two earlier acquisitions facebook had also let die quietly. "low usage" was the reason given. user data would be wiped within ninety days.

the actual fall was the standard one for compliment apps. the second wave of users was smaller than the first. the ones who came back found the same four contacts in the prompt and started ignoring the notifications. for the buyer, an app whose curve looks like a single autumn cannot be made to look like a steady chart no matter how many notifications you ship.

~ what it became ~

bier relaunched the same loop as gas in august 2022. gas added schools and pinned identities, plus paid features. it hit number one in the us app store again. discord bought it in early 2023, and as of late 2024 the gas brand had been folded back into discord's product surface. the loop got reincarnated and folded again.

the compliment-app pattern is now a known shape. it lives somewhere between a category and a stunt. someone is rebuilding it right now under a different name, and a teenager in a classroom in dallas is about to get a notification that says "someone in your year picked you for kindest eyes."

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.
